Lady Cats Drop Third Straight, 80-66 at West Liberty State

West Liberty State (WV) College used a 24-8 run to start the second half and break open a 35-34 halftime lead to hand the Lady Cats basketball team an 80-66 road loss, Thursday evening. Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Andrea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) added 16 points for Pitt-Johnstown, which has lost three straight and fell to 13-9 overall and 11-4 in the WVIAC.
Lindsay Cale's (Hummelstown, Pa.) layup at 15:10 gave the Lady Cats a 10-5 lead, but West Liberty State answered with a 6-0 run to go up 11-10 on Evelyn Woods basket 1:27 later. Pitt-Johnstown eventually built a pair of eight-point first half leads, the second coming on Jamie Gennett's (Davidsville, Pa.) free-throws with 4:44 left to put the Lady Cats up 28-20. However, the Lady Hilltoppers closed out the first half on a 15-6 run to erase the deficit and take a 35-34 halftime lead.
West Libety State took control with a 24-8 run to start the second half, capped by Woods layup at the 11:37 mark to increase the advantage to 59-42. The Lady Hilltoppers pushed the lead to 19 points at 8:24. Pitt-Johnstown closed the gap to 69-59 with an 11-2 run over the next 3:21 ended by Baker's free-throws, but that was as close as it would get, before West Liberty State went on to the 14-2-point win.
Baker finished with 16 points on 8-19 shooting and 12 rebounds, while Dalton chipped in 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, 2-4 from three-point range and 2-3 from the free-throw line. Cale scored 12 points and Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) added 10 points to round out the Lady Cats who scored in double figures. Gennett tallied eight points, four rebounds and two assists in the loss.
With her 12 points, Cale now has 983 for her career. Cale needs 17 points to become the 31st Lady Cat to reach the 1,000-point mark.
The Lady Cats shot 44.8% (26-58) from the field, but could not slow down the Lady Hilltoppers, who finished the night shooting 61.2% (30-49). Pitt-Johnstown was also just 2-9 from three behind the three-point line and 12-20 from the free-throw line, while West Liberty State hit 4-12 from three-point range and 16-26 from the charity stripe. Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds.
West Liberty State's Tori Hansen led all scorers with 29 points. Woods added 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Cassie Smith scored 11 points to lead the Lady Hilltoppers to their 11th straight win. West Liberty State is now 17-5 overall and 13-2 in conference play.
The Lady Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Saturday for Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
