Lady Cats Score 61-41 Win Over West Virginia State

Lady Cat senior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a game-high 26 points to help Head Coach Jodi Gault's Pitt Johnstown team overcome a poor shooting night and claim a 61-41 win over West Virginia State University, Thursday in the Sports Center. Pitt Johnstown has won three straight and 10 of its last 11 games to improve to 13-4.
Zapf wrapped up her night shooting 10-14 from the field and 6-6 from the free-throw. Zapf also pulled down nine rebounds, while senior forward Jami Oaks (South Fork, Pa.) scored 11 points on 3-7 shooting. Coach Gault also got a game-high 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals from red-shirt junior forward Sarah Priest (Johnstown, Pa.). Senior guard Chelsea McKinney (St. Petersburg, Pa.) had six points, tied her career-high with seven rebounds and made two steals in the win.
With her 26 points, Zapf now has 1,101 points and stands in 21st place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List. Zapf is also ranked seventh on the All-time Rebounding List with 764 career rebounds. She is now one rebound shy of tying Carol Mumma (1978-82) for six place on the list. Senior guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) scored six points and now has 1,026 career points. She is ranked 29th on the All-Time Scoring List.
The Lady Cats climbed out to a 24-13 halftime lead, before starting the second half on a 12-4 run. Pitt Johnstown increased the lead to 63-37 with 2:12 to play, before going on to the 20-point victory.
Pitt Johsntown improved on its 20.6% (7-34) shooting in the first half to finish the game at 32.8%. The Lady Cats held West Virginia State to just four baskets and 13.3% (4-30) shooting in the first half. The Yellow Jackets ended the night shooting 24.6% (14-57). The Lady Cats were also 19-23 (82.6%) from the free-throw line, while West Virginia State was just 10-18 (55.6%) from the line. Pitt Johnstown also out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 53-40 for the game, including holding an 18-13 advantage on the offensive end.
LaSha' Anderson's 10 points and Randi Cary's eight rebounds led the way for West Virginia State, now 3-14 on the year.
Pitt Johnstown travels to the University of the District of Columbia on Monday. The Lady Cats will return home to host West Virginia Wesleyan College on February 5 and California University (PA) on February 7. Tip-off for both home games is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
