Pitt Johnstown Downs Slippery Rock For Seventh Straight Victory; Zapf Grabs 16 More Rebounds

The Lady Cat basketball team, winners of six straight games, faced a stiff test Thursday night when an experienced Slippery Rock University team visited the Sports Center. However, Pitt Johnstown jumped out to a 10-0 lead two minutes into the game and never looked back. After taking a 33-22 lead into the locker room at halftime, the Lady Cats built a 16-point lead with 18:33 to play in the second half, before going on the win their seventh straight game, 70-55.
Senior forward Melissa Patterson (Alexandria, Pa.) led the Lady Cat attack with 22 points, including four three-point field goals. Junior center Samantha Conner (Everett, Pa.) added 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line, and sophomore forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied 12 points (5-8 shooting from field) and grabbed 16 rebounds for the second consecutive game. Sophomore guard Allison Krischer (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while junior guard Jaclyn Schirf (Loretto, Pa.) finished with five rebounds to help Pitt Johnstown improve to 7-1 on the season.
Similiar to Monday's game against Geneva, Pitt Johnstown got the job done from the free-throw line. The Lady Cats connected on 17-20 (85.0%) free-throws, including a 16-18 performance in the second half to seal the victory. Slippery Rock was just 5-8 (62.5%) from the line. The Lady Cats also forced 20 Slippery Rock turnovers and knocked down five three-point field goals.
Erin Frankovich was Slippery Rock's lone player to score in double-figures. Stacey Green and Amber McFeely each added eight points, while Green pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. With the loss, Slippery Rock has lost three straight games and drops to 4-4 on the year.
