09/28/2011

Janna Stoup's (Carlisle, Pa.) first career goal tied the score at one in the first half, but Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University used a Megan Newrones' penalty kick goal 11 minutes into the second half to hand the Lady Cat soccer team a 2-1 WVIAC road loss, Wednesday afternoon. Pitt-Johnstown fell to 1-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the WVIAC.
Brittany Decapio opened the scoring and gave Wheeling Jesuit a 1-0 with an unassisted in the 23rd minute.
The Lady Cats answered three minutes later to knot it at one on Stoup's goal just inside the top right corner off of Lisa Mix's (Framingham, MA) cross.
The score remained the same until the 56th minute when Megan Newrones found the back of the net behind Victoria Der Vanik (Bridgeville, Pa.) on a penalty kick to give the Cardinals the lead back at 2-1.
Pitt-Johnstown had a chance to tie it up late in the match, but Kelsey Richardson's (Scottdale, Pa.) free kick from the top of the box sailed over the net, and Wheeling Jesuit held on for the 2-1 victory.
Der Vanik faced 21 Wheeling Jesuit shots and made 12 saves, but surrendered both goals. Jennifer Fletcher earned the win in net for the Cardinals after seeing 11 Pitt-Johnstown shots and making four saves.
With the win, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 3-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats host a WVIAC match against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Point Stadium and a non-conference match against Salem International (WV) University on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
