Lady Cat Soccer Falls, 1-0, to Wheeling Jesuit

09/30/2010

Megan Newrones' lone goal of the match midway through the second half led Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University to a 1-0 victory over the Lady Cat soccer team, Thursday afternoon at a rainy and soggy Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field. The Lady Cats dropped to 1-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the WVIAC.
Newrones took a long punt from Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Melissa Taylor, dribbled around a pair of Lady Cat defenders and beat Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper Victoria Der Vanik (Bridgeville, Pa.) in the 59th minute for the match's only goal.
Der Vanik made eight saves after seeing 21 Cardinals' shots, but suffered the loss. Taylor, who picked-up an assist on Newrones' goal, faced seven Pitt-Johnstown shots and made five saves to earn the shutout.
With the win, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 5-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
The Lady Cats travel to Penn-State-DuBois for a non-conference match on Saturday, before hosting a WVIAC match against the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday, October 9 at noon at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
