(WVIAC Press Release)
West Virginia Wesleyan junior forward Sarah Van Horn is a runaway winner of the 2007-08 WVIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year award as voted upon by the league's 16 head coaches. Shepherd's Jodie Runner was recognized by her peers after leading the Rams to the conference's regular season title. Tori Hansen of West Liberty State rounds out the top women's basketball hardware winners in 2007-08 by claiming Freshman of the Year accolades.
Cale leads the Lady Cats in scoring (12.7 ppg.), assists (2.9 apg.), steals (51) blocks (34) and free-throw percentage (89.1%). Cale's 89.1% (82-92) currently ranks seventh in NCAA Division II, while her 1.4 blocks per game rank her 82nd in the country. She is also shooting 42.7% (125-293) from the field and 33.3% (14-42) from three-point range.
Aden stepped into Head Coach Sasha Palmer's starting lineup as a true freshman and is the team's second leading scorer at 9.9 points per game and fourth leading rebounder at 4.7 rebounds per game. Aden also has 61 assists and 38 steals. Her 81.1% (73-90) shooting from the free-throw line is second on the team and has her ranked 69th in the nation. Aden is shooting 44.0% (92-209) from the field.
Pitt Johnstown finished the 2007-08 regular season with a 10-17 overall record and secured eighth place in the WVIAC with a 9-11 record. The Lady Cats will take on #9-seeded Wheeling Jesuit in Monday's First Round of the WVIAC Tournament at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
Van Horn dominated the WVIAC stat charts during the regular season, pacing the conference in scoring (20.4 ppg) and steals (3.9 spg). The Wesleyan star paced the Bobcats to a 16-10 regular season mark and a fifth seed in this week's WVIAC Tournament.
Runner has directed Shepherd to the school's most successful regular season. The 21-5 Rams have established a single-season school record for victories and are currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II East Region. Shepherd's current 12-game win streak also sets a new standard for the program.
Hansen has been a key figure in West Liberty State's rise to the second spot in the current East Region rankings. The 5'8" guard has started all 27 contests for the 23-4 Hilltoppers. The Waterford, PA native rounded into form during the second semester by scoring in double figures during eleven contests, including a 22-point effort in an overtime victory at Bluefield State.
