Jessica Zapf Tabbed Second Team Academic All-American

Lady Cat senior forward Jessica Zapf (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was named to the ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-America Women's Basketball Team when this year's teams were released on Tuesday. Zapf, a Third Team Academic All-District selection in 2005-06, has a 3.85 overall G.P.A. in Elementary Education. The Academic All-America Teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Zapf, Pitt Johnstown's leading rebounder and second leading scorer, is the ninth Lady Cat to earn a spot on one of the All-Academic All-District Women's Basketball Teams and just the third to be honored on one of the two Academic All-American Teams. Melissa Patterson (Alexandria, Pa.) was a First Team Academic All-American in 2005, and Lindsay Baker (Saxton, Pa.) was tabbed a Second Team Academic All-American in 2002.
Zapf, a graduate of North Hills High School and a 2006-07 Preseason Women's Division II Bulletin Honorable Mention All-American, is averaging 17.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on her way to leading Pitt Johnstown to an 18-7 record and the current #8-ranking in the East Region. Her 57.5% Field Goal Percentage ranks sixth in NCAA Division II. Zapf also ranks 35th in the country in Points Per Game and 50th in Rebounds Per Game.
Zapf ranks 13th on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,247 points and sixth on Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 824 career rebounds.
Academically, Zapf has been on the Dean's List every semester in college. She has been inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society, Pi Lambda Theta Education Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Senior Honor Society. Zapf, a recipient of a Leadership Scholarship at Pitt Johnstown, is also a two-year president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Joining Zapf as a Second Team Academic All-American are Tarra Richardson (McMurry (TX) University), Stephanie Smith (Olivet (MI) College), Nikki Lewis (St. Francis (IN) University), Lacey Kennedy (Mississippi College) and Danielle Dwello (Northwest Nazarene (ID) University).
First Team Academic All-Americans include: Alison Adamson (Augustana (SC) College), Lisa Winkle (Calvin (MI) College), Mary Moskal (Lewis (IL) University), Julie Anderson (Mercyhurst College), Ashley Marble (University of Southern Maine) and Sarah Grab, (West Virginia Wesleyan College)
In order to be nominated for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.0. Nominees must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. In addition, the student-athlete must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
