Pitt-Johnstown used three falls, including one by Dave Cawley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) over fourth-ranked Evan Yenolevich at 141 lbs., to lead the 11th-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers to a 24-17 victory at No. 18 Kutztown University on Wednesday. Pitt-Johnstown evened its record at 1-1.
The Mountain Cats got falls from Evan Link (Cresson, Pa.) and Cawley and a decision from All-American Jack Bachman (Greensburg, Pa.) to open-up a 15-4 lead after the first four bouts.
Link pinned Nick Lamoreaux at 2:19 to start the match, before Kutztown cut it to 6-4 with Austin Ormsbee's 12-1 major decision over Ben Rager (Ebensburg, Pa.) at 133 lbs.
Cawley then pinned fourth-ranked Yenolevich at 2:09, and Bachman follwoed with an 8-4 decision over Mitch Voelker at 149 lbs. to extend the lead to 15-4.
The Golden Bears won by decision at 149 lbs. and by major decision at 157 lbs. to cut the deficit to 15-11, but the Mountain Cats put the match away with victories in the next two matches.
Pitt-Johnstown got a 3-0 win by Brian Gibbons (Buffalo Mills, Pa.) over Ricky Pena at 174 lbs., and All-American Travis McKillop (Lower Burrell, Pa.) pinned Giovanni Pena at 5:31 in the 184-lb. bout to build the lead to 24-11 and put the match out of reach.
At 197 lbs., Kutztown's Vinny Campanile defeated Sean O'Connell (Farmington, CT), 5-3, before Ziad Haddad closed out the match and set the final at 24-17 with a 10-3 decision by over Josh Duplin (Johnstown, Pa.) at 285 lbs.
With the loss, Kutztown fell to 0-1.
The Mountain Cats travel to No. 6 University of Findlay (OH) on December 1, before making their 2012-13 home debut on Tuesday, December 4 against No. 20 East Stroudsburg University at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
