Mountain Cats Erase Deficit, But Fall In OT at Lock Haven

Pitt-Johnstown erased a 20-point deficit to force overtime on three Andrew Cressler free-throws with two seconds left, but Lock Haven University held on to edge the Mountain Cats and snap their three-game winning streak with an 81-76 win on Friday.  Cressler's 20 points paced five Pitt-Johnstown double figure scorers.  The Mountain Cats are now 8-4.
 
The Mountain Cats, who trailed the entire game, clawed all the way back to force overtime.  After Cressler tied it at 67, a free-throw by Kasheef Frestus gave the lead back to Lock Haven with just 11 second to play, and two more from the charity stripe made it a 70-67 game.
 
Cressler was then fouled shooting a 3-pointer and knocked down all three free-throws with two seconds to get Pitt-Johnstown into the overtime period.
 
In the overtime, Ian Vescovi opened the scoring and gave Pitt-Johnstown its first lead of the day, before Nate Snodgrass hit a pair of free-throws to put the Mountain Cats in front 76-73.
 
The Bald Eagles went back in front 79-76 on Nate Walters' jumper with 30 seconds remaining, and Lock Haven held on for the five-point victory.
 
Lock Haven jumped on the Mountain Cats out of the gate.  The Bald Eagles took advantage of Pitt-Johnstown's 36% first half shooting and opened the game on a 17-3 run, capped by an Al Blount 3-pointer at 12:50, before pushing it out to a 20-point advantage with 5:24 remaining in the half.
 
After falling behind by 14, The Mountain Cats got a jumper from Jake Laravie to cut it to 23-11 midway through the half, but Lock Haven answered with a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to built it to 37-17.
 
The Mountain Cats tried to get back in it before the half.  Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Bald Eagles 9-2 the rest of the way.  Snodgrass' bucket made it a 13-point game, and Vescovi added a bucket to get the deficit down to 39-26 at the break.
 
Back-to-back baskets by Cressler and a 3-pointer from Bill Luther to start the second half extended the Mountain Cat run to 16-2 and got Pitt-Johnstown to within six.
 
However, Lock Haven quickly pushed it back into double figures at 48-35 on consecutive Wali Hepburn 3-pointers with 15:35 to play.
 
The Mountain Cats continued to battle.  Matt Palo's jumper with 1:33 to go cut it to two, before Cressler's jumper knotted it at 67 with 55 seconds left to set up the wild finish.
 
Cressler led the Mountain Cats with 20 points and four rebounds.  Snodgrass scored 13 points, while Palo and Shaheen each netted 11 points.  Vescovi rounded out the Pitt-Johnstown double figure scorers with 10 points and five rebounds.  Luther also chipped in nine points and six rebounds, before fouling out.
 
Luther currently stands in 24th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,019 points, and third on the career-3-Point Filed Goals List with 217.
 
Pitt-Johnstown rebounded from a slow start shooting to end the game at 45.9% (28-61).  The Mountain Cats made 4-11 from 3-point range and connected on 16-22 from the free-throw line.  Lock Haven shot 42.6% (23-54) from the floor, 6-17 from behind the 3-point line, and 29-40 from the charity stripe.
 
Hepburn's game-high 23 points paced Lock Haven.  Festus' scored 22 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, while Julian Bond added 11 points for the Bald Eagles, who made it three straight wins and improved to 7-4.
 
The Mountain Cats play at Bloomsburg University on Saturday, before hosting a doubleheader with the Lady Cats against 10th-ranked East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday in the Sports Center.  The Lady Cats will tip-off at starting at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
