Pitt-Johnstown got 11 kills apiece from
Delaney Roman and
Cambria Wierman to battle back from a two-set deficit, but it wasn't enough, as Point Park held on to defeat the Lady Cats 3-sets-to-2 in Tuesday's non-conference match in Pittsburgh. Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 11-11 on the year.
The Pioneers downed the Lady Cats 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, and 15-9.
After falling behind by five in the first set, the Lady Cats answered with six straight points to take the lead.
Kendall Mahony's service ace knotted it at 16, before a Pitt-Johnstown kill made it 17-16. However, Point Park scored the next four and went on to outscore Pitt-Johnstown 9-4 the rest of the way to take the set, 25-21.
In set two, the Pioneers used an 8-2 run to break a 12-12 tie and build a 20-14 advantage. The Lady Cats stormed back with seven unanswered points, capped by a
Devan Orr ace, to take a 21-20 lead, but a block to close it out gave Point Park a 25-22 win.
Pitt-Johnstown stayed alive with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set. The Lady Cats held a slim 21-20 lead, the scored four of the last five points to secure the win.
Point Park battled back from a pair of three-point deficits to take a 16-14 lead in the fourth set. It didn't slow the Lady Cats' momentum, though. Pitt-Johnstown took control and outscored the Pioneers 11-2 to win, 25-18 on Roman's kill, and force a fifth set.
The fifth set see-sawed back-and-forth with neither team able to go up by more than two much of the way, until Point Park snapped a 9-9 tie with six consecutive points to secure the victory, 15-9.
Roman contributed nine digs and Wierman added six digs, while Mahony collected ten kills, four digs, three blocks and two aces.
Nikki Oakes collected 21 assists, six digs and three aces, and
Nicole Curran gathered 18 assists and four digs. Orr accumulated 19 digs, while
Logan McIntosh had ten digs.
With the win, Point Park improved to 22-10.
The Lady Cats travel to PSAC matches at East Stroudsburg on Friday and Kutztown on Saturday, before returning home for four straight matches beginning with a conference match against Lock Haven on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
