Cambria Wierman led Pitt-Johnstown with 15 kills in a three-sets-to-two non-conference victory over Alderson Broaddus (WV) University, Thursday night in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats made it four straight wins and improved 15-11 overall.
After falling behind 6-2 in the opening set, Pitt-Johnstown scored the next seven points to go in front 9-6 on a kill by
Madeline George, followed by a bad set from the Battlers. Pitt-Johnstown never gave up the lead. The Lady Cats extended their run to make it 15-9 then extended it to 20-12 on a
Larissa Swank kill before going onto the 25-17 win.
In set two, Wierman's block put the Lady Cats in front 8-5. Alderson-Broaddus answered with six straight points, capped by Elise Wolff's kill to take a 14-13 lead. Pitt-Johnstown rebuilt the lead to 21-18 on
Delaney Roman's kill, but the Battlers tied it at 23 and eventually evened the match with a 28-26 victory.
Alderson-Broaddus kept the momentum in the third set. The Battlers outscored the Lady Cats 14-6 to break open a tie game and build an 18-10 advantage. The Lady Cats stormed back to tie it at 20 on consecutive errors by Alderson-Broaddus, however the Battlers scored the next three and held on for a 25-22 win.
Pitt-Johnstown stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. The Battlers opened up a 15-12 lead but Pitt-Johnstown was able to come back 21-20 and regain the lead on
Nikki Oakes's service ace. After the Battlers knotted it at 21, Pitt-Johnstown secured the win on
Kendall Mahony and Swank's block.
Mahony's kill got Pitt-Johnstown even at 12 and the Lady Cats never looked back. Wierman's kill put the Lady Cats in front by one before an Alderson-Broaddus ball handling error closed out a 15-13 Pitt-Johnstown win.
Along with 15 kills, Wierman added 15 digs, and Mahony added 13 kills. Roman had 12 kills and 17 digs, while Oakes collected 31 assists and 11 digs.
Nicole Curran gathered 20 assists and 10 digs,
Devan Orr added 29 digs.
The Lady Cats will close out the 2014 home schedule with PSAC matches in the Sports Center against Cheyney University on Friday at 7 p.m. and West Chester University for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
