Palo's Lay-Up Leads Mountain Cats Over Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa.

Box Score
Matt Palo's lay-up with three seconds remaining lifted Pitt-Johnstown to a 73-71 PSAC West victory at Mercyhurst University in Wednesday's season finale.  Despite the win, Pitt-Johnstown came up short of earning a bid to the 2014 PSAC Tournament and ended with a 13-13 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference-play.

The Mountain Cats jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Andrew Cressler's 3-pointer six minutes in.

Mercyhurst narrowed it to seven midway through the half, but Pitt-Johnstown scored the next seven points to rebuild the lead back to 14 at 25-11 on a Matt Palo jumper.

The Lakers came back again.  This time, James Ewing's bucket at the four-minute mark cut it to 30-25, but the Mountain Cats outscored Mercyhurst 9-3 the rest of the way to take a 39-28 halftime advantage.

A 7-0 run by Mercyhurst to start the second half cut the deficit to four on Anthony Lytle's bucket in the paint, but two straight Bill Luther 3-pointers and a pair of Cressler free-throws pushed the lead back to a dozen at 49-35 with 15 minutes to play.

Callon Dailey's basket cut the Lakers' deficit in half three minutes later, before an Ian Vescovi's lay-up pushed it back out to a 10-point Mountain Cat lead at 9:31.

Mercyhurst countered with a 15-5 run over the next five minutes ti tie it at 64 on Jonathan Ouegnin's free-throws with 4:49 to play.

It remained close, but Palo's bucket with time winding down lifted Pitt-Johnstown to the two-point victory.

Vescovi's 15 points and team-high seven rebounds led five Mountain Cats who scored in double figures.  Cressler scored 13 points, while Luther had 11 points, and Nate Snodgrass and Palo each finished with 10 points.

Luther wrapped-up his career ranked 15th on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,231 points and third on the career-3-Point Field Goals List with 263.

Ouegnin had 15 points, and Jean Onana and Dailey each scored a dozen points for Mercyhurst, which improved to 15-11 overall and 11-5 in conference-play.
