#12 Wrestlers Pull Away From Gannon, 27-8

Johnstown, PA

After a somewhat slow start, the 12th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers got a pin from Gary Lantz at 165 lbs. to break open a close match in a 27-8 PSAC victory over Gannon University, Saturday night in the Sports Center.  The Mountain Cats extended their winning streak to 10 straight matches and improved to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC.

Gannon jumped out to an early 3-0 when 2013 All-American Matt Turek dealt third-ranked Dave Fogle a 12-5 loss at 125 lbs.

That seemed to wake the Mountain Cats up.  Pitt-Johnstown quickly responded with Luke Palamides' 8-4 decision over region No. 6 Adam Weinell at 133 lbs. and a 10-2 major decision by Sam Hanau over Johnny Marotto at 141 lbs to take the lead, 6-2 after each team was deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the bout.

At 149 lbs., Cole Landowski increased it to 9-2 won a 4-0 decision over Eric Lewandowski, before the Golden Knights answered with an 11-5 win by Buddy Blotzer over Heath Coles to cut it 9-5.

That was as close as Gannon would get because Gary Lantz pinned Casey pace in the 165-lb. bout at 6:39 and John Blankenship held off Christopher Matthews, 2-0, at 174 lbs. to extend it to 18-5.

Pitt-Johnstown wasn't done yet.  Two-time All-American and third-ranked Travis McKillop opened-up a 3-0 lead and used a riding time point to defeat fifth-ranked Zack Zelcs, 4-0 at 184 lbs.  Zac Bennett then earned his 13th fall of the year when he pinned Trevor Beiter at 2:04 to make it 27-5.

The Golden Knights closed out the match with Nick Budd's 5-3 decision over Josh Duplin at 285 lbs. to set the final at 27-8.

With the loss, Gannon dropped to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC.

Pitt-Johnstown travels to Shippensburg on Thursday, before celebrating Senior Night against ninth-ranked Mercyhurst on February 19 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.  The Mountain Cats will then host the 2014 NCAA Division II Super Region I Tournament on March 1-2.
