Cal U Sinks the Lady Cats with Three Second Half Goals

3113Janelle McCann netted the first three goals of play, recording a hat trick to lead the Vulcans of California University (PA) to a 4-0 PSAC victory over the Pitt-Johnstown women's soccer team, Wednesday afternoon in Johnstown.  The Lady Cats fell to 0-14-1 overall and 0-13-1 in conference-play.

Less than 20 minutes into the game, a punt from Vulcan goalie Meghan Jayes to midfield led McCann to score a breakaway goal and give California University (PA) an early 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

McCann quickly opened the second half with a goal in the 46th minute, scoring from the far right side of the box off of a crossed ball from Selena Fushimi-Karns.

The Lady Cats were unable to pull ahead as the Vulcans maintained momentum, improving to a 3-0 lead with a third goal from McCann, who finished a cross to the front of the net from Selena Fushimi-Karns in the 62nd minute.

Kaeli Tuinstra sent the ball past Pitt-Johnstown keeper Leigh Appolonia in the 68th minute, scoring the final goal and securing the win for the Vulcans.

Appolonia suffered the loss in goal for the Lady Cats after seeing 18 shots and making six saves.

Meghan Jayes recorded the shutout in goal for the Vulcans after facing six shots from Pitt-Johnstown and making three saves. Jayes was replaced by Michaela Colon in the 67th minute who closed out the game in goal. California University (PA) is now 8-5-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the PSAC. 

The Lady Cats travel to Gannon University for a conference match on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., before returning to host their final home conference match against Kutztown University on October 27th. Pitt-Johnstown will close their season with a nonconference match on October 31 at Goldey-Beacom (DE) College.
