Harper Nets 1,000th Point, But Virginia Union Wins at Buzzer

3131Jasmine Harper scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to become Pitt-Johnstown's 36th 1,000-point scorer, but Kiana Johnson's jumper at the buzzer erased a 13-point fourth quarter deficit and lifted Virginia Union University to a 73-72 victory over the Lady Cats in Sunday's final round of the 2015 Shepherd (WV) University Classic.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 1-1.
 
Harper, who needed 13 points to reach the milestone scored a team-high 18 points, including a pair of free-throws at the 5:36 mark of the third quarter to become Pitt-Johnstown's 36th 1,000-point scorer.  Harper currently stands in 35th-place on the Lady Cat All-time Scoring List with 1,005 points.  She is also tied for 17th-place with Julie Schlimm (1989-93) on the All-time Rebounding List with 609 rebounds.
 
Agnese Aramina's bucket to open the fourth quarter increased Pitt-Johnstown's lead to 55-42, but Virginia Union stormed back with a 26-12 run to retake the lead, 68-67, on a free-throw from Smith with 1:41 to play.
 
The Panthers then used two more free-throws from Smith after a technical foul was call on the Pitt-Johnstown bench just four seconds later to make it 7:67.
 
The Lady Cat stayed it an and retook the lead 72-71 on three Kayla DeCriscio free-throws with just 13 seconds left, but Kiana Johnson scored two of her game-high 33 points with one second on the clock to give the Panthers the victory.
 
Two straight baskets by Ashley Smith put Virginia Union up 10-5 six minutes into the first quarter.  Pitt-Johnstown narrowed the gap to one on two occasions, before a pair of Victoria Moreland free-throws knotted it at 17 with 48 seconds left in the quarter.  The Panthers scored the final five points, including a lay-up from Rahni Bell at the buzzer.
 
Another basket to open the second quarter put Virginia in front 24-17, but the Lady Cats responded with a 14-2 run over the next 6:43 to regain the lead by five.  DeCriscio hit a 3-pointer that gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown, and Olivia McCabe scored with 3:04 remaining to close the run and give the Lady Cats a 31-26 lead.
 
McCabe's lay-up two possessions later increased it to 34-28 until Johnson hit a jumper for the Panthers to get the deficit down to two.  However, Leah Hansen's jumper fell as time expired and the Lady Cats took a 36-32 halftime lead.
 
After Virginia Union got the deficit down just over four minutes into the third quarter, Pitt-Johnstown scored the next eight to rebuild the lead to 49-38 on DeCriscio's fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon.  Pitt-Johnstown held that lead going into the final period.
 
Along with Harper's 18 points and eight rebounds, DeCriscio finished with 15 points, and McCabe had 10 points and four rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Cats.  Ana Hollen had seven points and five rebounds, while Hansen collected six points, five rebounds, and a game-high 10 assists.  Pitt-Johnstown also got five points and five rebounds from Olivia Rizzo and five points from Laurel O'Barto.
 
Pitt-Johnstown ended the day shooting 41.7% (25-60) from the field, 7-20 from 3-point range, and 15-20 from the free-throw line.  Virginia Union was held to 40.0% (26-65) shooting from the floor and 3-14 from behind the 3-point line.  The Panthers were also 18-30 from the charity stripe.
 
Johnson tallied 33 points, six rebounds, and five assists to pace Virginia Union.  Lady Walker had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Smith had 15 points for the Panthers, who improved to 2-0.
 
The Lady Cats will make their 2015-16 home debut and open the PSAC schedule against California University (PA), the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center., before hosting PSAC Crossover games against West Chester University on Saturday and Cheyney University on Sunday
