After recognizing
Larissa Swank, this year's lone senior, the Lady Cat volleyball team closed out the 2015 regular season home schedule by sweeping East Stroudsburg 25-13, 25-13, 27-25 Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. In the process, Pitt-Johnstown clinched the PSAC Eastern Division regular season title and improved to 26-4 overall and 17-2 in conference-play.
East Stroudsburg scored the first two points of the match, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly took control with a 9-2 run to go up 9-4 on
Marissa Erminio's kill. Two
Cambria Wierman kills and a
Delaney Roman service ace increased it to 17-8, before the Lady Cats extended the lead into double digits at 20-10 on kills by
Maura Brehl and Gabriel Carney. Pitt-Johnstown then used another kill from Erminio to secure the 25-13 win.
Allison Mondorff's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown an 11-6 advantage to start the second set. The Warriors cut it to 12-9 on kills by Courtney Miller and Sarah Fillman, but the Lady Cats went on to outscore East Stroudsburg 13-3 the rest of the way. Carney's ace followed by a Warriors' error made it 20-12, and kills from Erminio and
Madeline George helped Pitt-Johnstown made it 2-set-to-none with another 25-13 victory.
Two consecutive Pitt-Johnstown errors allowed East Stroudsburg to climb out to a narrow 4-2 lead in the third set, but once again, the Lady Cats came back to build a 9-5 lead. Tina Predojevic's kill got the Warriors to within one at 11-10. However, Pitt-Johnstown used kills from Brehl and Wierman to push it out to 18-11. Brehl's ace then made it 21-13, but East Stroudsburg stormed back with a 12-3 run to retake the lead 25-24, but Pitt-Johnstown scored the final three points to complete the sweep with a 27-25 win.
Wierman's match-high 10 kills and 17 digs led Pitt-Johnstown. Brehl had eight kills, while Erminio seven kills and Carney had five kills, three blocks and three aces.
Mondorff (19 assists) and
Jessica Dillon (10 assists) combined for 29 set assists, and
Devan Orr tallied a match-high 20 digs and three assists.
Desiree Claxton led the Way for East Stroudsburg with nine kills. The Warriors fell to 7-23 overall and 2-18 in the PSAC Eastern Division.
Pitt-Johnstown will close out the regular season with road PSAC matches at West Chester and Cheyney on Friday and Saturday, before opening the 2015 PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, November 17 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
