Mountain Cats hold off Gannon, 60-56, for season's Eighth win

in Johnstown, Pa.

Box Score 3193Dale Clancy garnered a game-high 18 points along with six rebounds and three assists as Pitt-Johnstown defeated Gannon University, 60-56 in PSAC West Division action Saturday at the Hammerhill Center in Erie.
 
A.J. Leahey added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Issac Vescovi tallied 14 points as the Mountain Cats advanced to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
 
Pitt-Johnstown made only eight shots in each half, but was overshadowed by the Golden Knights shooting one-for-seven from beyond the arc in each half, making 14.3% of total three-point shots.
 
Gannon, however, got out to a 10-2 lead to start the game after, but the Mountain Cats were able to go on an 8-0 run. Clancy made a three-pointer to cap off the run with 13:05 remaining in the half to give UPJ an 11-10 lead.
 
The lead changed four more times up to the 7:58 mark when Leahey drained a three-pointer to give Pitt-Johnstown a 17-15 advantage. The team maintained the lead for the remainder of the half.
 
The Mountain Cats headed into halftime with a 33-29 lead with the half's last bucket coming from Gannon's Kevin Kuteyi, who made a layup with a minute remaining.
 
Clancy hit another three-pointer with 14:29 left in the game, which helped give Pitt-Johnstown a 43-36 lead, but the Golden Knights scored the next seven points to take the lead from the Mountain Cats when Kuteyi hit a jumper in the paint to put Gannon up 44-43.
 
Gannon's lead also lasted for 19 seconds and Pitt-Johnstown eventually regained the lead with 9:04 remaining when Clancy grabbed a defensive rebound and made a layup on a fastbreak to give UPJ a 46-44 lead, which they held on to for the rest of the game.
 
The Mountain Cats' biggest lead of the last nine minutes came when Leahey drained a layup in the paint with 4:34 left to put Pitt-Johnstown up 54-46.
 
Gannon scored 10 of the last 16 points, but was not enough as UPJ was able to hold off the Golden Knights when Clancy was fouled by Gannon's Emmanuel Matey and made both layups to give Pitt-Johnstown a four-point lead with a second remaining on the clock.
 
Jean-Yves Toupane led the Golden Knights, who fell to 2-9 overall and 1-7 in conference competition with the loss, with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Kutkeyi also added 14 points.
 
The Mountain Cats are to finish their seven-game road trip at Millersville University Jan. 3 3 p.m.  The team is to play its next home game against Shippensburg University Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. as part of a PSAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats.
