Lady Cats fall to Gannon, 78-64

in Johnstown, Pa.

Box Score 3131Jasmine Harper scored 18 points and 10 rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown, but the team could not overcome Gannon University's early lead as the Golden Knights defeated the Lady Cats, 78-64 in PSAC West action Saturday at the Hammermill Center in Erie.
 
Harper produced her third double-double performance of the season and has crept even closer to surpassing Kelsey Sleighter (2011-15) for 27th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List and Suzy Shimkus (1980-84) for 13th place on the All-Time Rebounds List.
 
Harper has now tallied 1,112 career points, five points behind Sleighter, and 664 career rebounds, which is 17 behind Shimkus.
 
Olivia Rizzo added 10 points and two rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown, who fell to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play after the loss.
 
The Golden Knights started the game with a 6-0 run by the 8:31 mark of the first quarter, but the Lady Cats eventually tied the game at 10 when Laurel O'Barto made a layup in the paint 2:50 later.
 
A lead didn't grow over four points for the rest of the quarter, but Gannon managed to go into the second quarter with a 20-18 lead after a layup from Nicole LaCava 27 seconds before the period was over.
 
Gannon eventually stretched the score to 29-21 after 3:09 of play in the second quarter, but Pitt-Johnstown was able to storm back on a 12-2 run to secure its second lead of the game as Ana Hollen drained a three-pointer with 3:17 left in the half to give the Lady Cats a 33-31 advantage.
 
The Golden Knights once again got the lead back with 1:51 left on a layup from Morgan Neighbors to give Gannon a 34-33 lead. They kept the advantage heading into halftime, but the team's lead was cut in half at the buzzer on a three-pointer by Rizzo to put the Lady Cats behind by three points, 39-36.
 
Pitt-Johnstown scored the first four points of the third quarter and regained the lead when Harper made a layup into put the Lady Cats ahead 40-39 with 8:40 remaining in the period. Gannon was able to tie the game three times throughout the quarter, but most of the time, UPJ held the advantage.
 
The Lady Cats eventually got out to a 49-45 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter after Harper was fouled by LaCava and made one of two free-throw shots. Gannon was able to score six of the last eight points and tie the game at 51 heading into the game's final ten minutes. Neighbors made a layup in the paint to tie the game with 12 seconds left.
 
The lead changed twice in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter until Gannon's offense took over and scored 24 points in the game's final seven minutes to captures its ninth win of the season.
 
Neighbors finished the game with game-high 22 points along with six rebounds for the Golden Knights, who advanced to 9-3 overall and 7-1 conference action.
 
The Lady Cats are to have the next 12 days off before traveling to Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) University for a non-conference on New Year's Eve at 1 p.m. The team's next home game is scheduled for Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center against Shippensburg University in a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats.
