Harper, Lady Cats Get Past Mansfield, 90-81, in Overtime

3131Jasmine Harper's game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds led five Lady Cat double-digit scorers and helped Pitt-Johnstown secure a 90-81 overtime PSAC Crossover victory at Mansfield University, Saturday afternoon.  The Lady cats improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC Western Division.
 
In a tight game throughout, Pitt-Johnstown got baskets from Harper and Olivia McCabe with 1:46 to play and retook the lead 69-66.  However, Tianna Jackson nailed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go to knot it at 73 and force overtime.
 
Pitt-Johnstown took control in the extra period.  Olivia Rizzo hit a pair of 3-pointers and McCabe scored in the paint to give the Lady Cats an 81-75 lead.  Becky Evans got the Mountaineers back to with three with 35 seconds on the clock, but Pitt-Johnstown sealed it by connecting on six of its eight free-throws down the stretch.
 
Two baskets in the first minute by Harper and a 3-pointer from Ana Hollen put the Lady Cats in font to start.
 
After missing their first five shots, the Mountaineers got back-to-back 3-pointer from Melanie Taylor and Jackson to cut it to two, but Pitt-Johnstown used an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to double-up Mansfield 16-8 on another bucket from Harper.
 
The Lady Cats then increased it to 20-13 on Leah Hansen's lay-up as time expired in the first quarter.
 
Harper's free-throw to open the second quarter gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the half at 21-23, but the Mountaineers continued to hit 3-pointers and outscored Pitt-Johnstown 18-6 over the next 7:27 to take a four-point lead of their own.  Evans and Megan McSwain each connected for 3-pointers, and Jackson added another to get Mansfield to within one, before Alyssa Mullins' lay-up closed the run and gave the Mountaineers a 30-26 lead at the 2:33 mark.
 
Pitt-Johnstown got a 3-pointer on its next possession from Kayla DeCriscio, but another bucket from Mullins with 40 seconds left gave Mansfield a 34-31 halftime advantage.
 
Mansfield pushed the lead out to 42-37 three minutes into the third quarter on a Becky Evans' basket.
 
The Lady Cats came right back with an 11-2 spurt, capped by Hansen's bucket, to regain the lead by four, and took a 54-49 advantage heading into the fourth quarter when Hansen scored with just three seconds remaining.
 
Pitt-Johnstown held the momentum and got a 3-pointer from Victoria Moreland to make it 59-51 early in the fourth quarter, but Mansfield clawed back with a 12-2 run of its own to go back on top 63-61 on five straight points from Evans with 4:30 to play.
 
Along with Harper, Pitt-Johnstown got 17 points and nine rebounds from McCabe, and 14 points apiece from Rizzo and DeCriscio.  Hollen had 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, and Hansen chipped-in eight points as the Lady Cats snapped a two-game losing streak.
 
Harper climbed five spots into 28th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,061 points.  She is also 16th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 638 rebounds.
 
Neither team had a great shooting day.  Pitt-Johnstown shot 38.2% (29-76) and 8-29 from 3-point range, while the Mountaineers were held to 37.8% (28-74) and 11-24 from behind the 3-point line.  Pitt-Johnstown, which held a 56-48 advantage on the boards, was 24-26 from the free-throw line.  Mansfield shot 14-26 from the charity stripe.
 
Evans finished with 20 points and Jackson had 19 points to lead Mansfield.  Katie Fitzpatrick also had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who dropped their third straight game and fell to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC East.
 
The Lady Cats will play Saint Francis University in a non-conference game at the Cambria County War Memorial on December 12 before hosting a non-conference game against the University of Charleston (WV) on December 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
