Vescovi puts up 20 points; Mountain Cats run away with 82-57 victory

Isaac Vescovi finished with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds that helped guide Pitt-Johnstown to its 11th win of the season, defeating Clarion University, 82-57 in PSAC West Division action Monday at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 23 but was postponed for two days due to inclement weather.
 
Nate Snodgrass also provided an offensive boost with 17 points for the Mountain Cats, who advanced to 11-7 overall and 8-6 conference play with the win.
 
Two three-pointers by Snodgrass and Dale Clancy gave Pitt-Johnstown an early 6-3 lead after 2:38 of play. The Mountain Cats maintained the lead throughout the half and eventually, throughout the game. Clancy hit a second three-point shot after an assist from Snodgrass at the 15:58 mark to give his team a 13-9 lead. Clancy finished the game with 11 points, five assists and four rebounds.
 
Both teams went back and forth trading baskets as Clarion tied the game at 13 and 15 points, but after the Golden Eagles' De'Ondre Terrell made a layup to even the score at 15, the Mountain Cats scored five straight points, a layup from Vescovi and a three-pointer from Jake Laravie, to give UPJ a 20-15 lead with 11:42 to go in the half.
 
Laravie finished the game with six points, three rebounds and three assists in seven minutes of playing time.
 
Over the next 8:49, Pitt-Johnstown embarked on a 23-6 run that lasted until there was 2:53 to go in the half. In the amount of time the run happened, the Mountain Cats built a 43-21 advantage. The run was highlighted by six points from A.J. Leahey, five points from Snodgrass and a dunk from Dom Keyes to cap off the run.
 
Leahey produced 11 total points along with five rebounds and five assists while Keyes recorded six points and four rebounds in eight minutes of playing time.
 
In the half's last two minutes, eight combined free throws were made with both teams making four. Clancy and Olando King Jr. for Pitt-Johnstown while Tim Gill and Larry Johnson did so for the Golden Eagles. Andre' Anthony hit a jumper for Clarion with 30 seconds to go in the half to cut the Mountain Cat's halftime lead to 47-27. King Jr. tallied seven points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time.
 
The Mountain Cats' lead did not fall under 14 points throughout the rest of the game. Although, in the first ten minutes of the second half, they were outscored 18-14 by the 10:11 second half mark.
 
What happened after the ten minute mark was a different story, however, as Pitt-Johnstown scored 15 of the next 17 points to construct a 30-point, 77-47 lead. Vescovi produced the most offense over the run, scoring ten points including the layup that gave his team its 77th-point of the night, which ultimately secured the victory for the Mountain Cats.
 
Gill led the Golden Eagles, who fall to 10-10 overall and 7-7 in conference play with the loss, with 13 points and six rebounds.
 
The Mountain Cats are to host Seton Hill University Saturday at 3 p.m. in a PSAC West Division doubleheader with the Lady Cats at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center. On Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m., the team is to then travel to California University (Pa.) for a doubleheader with the Lady Cats.
