Lady Cat lose lead in fourth quarter and game, 71-67, to Seton Hill

Jasmine Harper produced a team-high 16 points, which helped her move up on the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball All-Time Scoring list, but Seton Hill University overcame a fourth quarter deficit with a couple of late-game offensive surges to earn a 71-67 PSAC West Division victory Saturday Afternoon in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
 
Jamie Tabon's offensive production was highlighted by a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds, for the Lady Cats, who fell to 8-13 overall and 4-11 in conference competition with the loss.
 
Harper's offensive performance puts her in 20th place in the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring list with 1,204 career points, passing Melissa Patterson's (2001-05) 1,196 career points.
 
Harper also grabbed a single rebound, which adds to her career total of 711. She currently remains 11 rebounds behind Helen Young (1999-03) for 11th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding list.
 
To start the game, Pitt-Johnstown scored the first seven points of the game by the 6:09 first quarter mark, in which Harper contributed three of the seven points with a layup and free throw. Seton Hill was able to score five of the next seven points to cut the Lady Cats lead to 9-5 with five minutes left in the period.
 
The Lady Griffins continued to build momentum and got within a point of the lead on three occasions throughout the rest of the period. Seton Hill eventually amounted a 10-4 run when Halie Torris hit a shot from behind the arc at the 2:38 mark to put the Lady Griffins within a point of the lead, still trailing 11-10.
 
With Pitt-Johnstown leading 14-13, Olivia McCabe produced a three-point play after being fouled by Seton Hill's Lindsey Mifsud while making a layup with 57 seconds remaining in the period. McCabe's points were enough to help the Lady Cats keep the lead heading into the second quarter. She finished the game with nine points and seven rebounds.
 
3140The second quarter was fairly even as both teams traded the lead with the deficit never growing more than four points. By the 7:27 mark, the Lady Griffins scored five unanswered points, which gave them a 21-19 advantage after a layup from Harper kicked the period off.
 
The Lady Griffins were able to maintain control of the lead for most of the period, although Pitt-Johnstown was able to tie the game three times, at 24, 26 and 28 points, before regaining the lead due to a pair of free throws from Tabon to break a 28-28 tie and give the Lady Cats a two-point lead at the 2:29 mark in the period. Tabon's free throws helped her team close out the half with a 34-32 advantage after a pair of free throws from Kayla DeCriscio with 24 seconds left until halftime. She finished the game with five points.
 
Similar to the start of the first half, the Lady Cats scored the first six points of the second half, which gave them a 40-32 advantage with 8:33 to go in the third quarter. Seton Hill responded with a jumper from Hannah Laslo 13 seconds later to cut the lead to six points.
 
From that point, Seton Hill was without a point for almost three minutes, it was not until the 5:48 mark when Torris made a pair of free throws to cut their trailing margin to 42-36. During the Lady Griffin's drought, McCabe made a layup off of an assist from Ana Hollen to earn the Lady Cats' their 42nd points of the game.
 
Seton Hill was able to get within two points of the lead in the last four minutes of the period, including being down only 48-47 with 28 seconds remaining in the period after a free throw from Laslo, but a layup from Tabon with three seconds left held off the Lady Griffin's for the start of the last quarter.
 
After being down 56-49 with 9:17 left to play, Seton Hill went on an 8-0 run that lasted until the 5:58 fourth quarter mark and was capped off by a three-pointer from Mifsud to give the Lady Griffin's 57-56 lead. Harper answered with a pair of free throws after being fouled by Kinross Obiefule to give the Lady Cats the 58-57 advantage 14 seconds later.
 
Less than a minute after Pitt-Johnstown regained the lead, Harper produced a three-point play of her own after being fouled by Mifsud once again to stretch her team's lead to 61-57. Seton Hill was able to score nine of the next 13 points and recover a 66-65 lead with 2:06 left to go in the game from Jharrin Gill after being fouled by Harper, who fouled out.
 
Jenna Kaufmann followed up with a layup 43 seconds later to give the Lady Griffin's a three-point lead. Two free throws, one from Ana Hollen and one from Olivia Rizzo, put the Pitt-Johnstown within a point of the lead with 43 seconds remaining, but three free throws in the last 12 seconds of the game from Mifsud finished off the Lady Cats.
 
Kaufman led the game with 20 points while Mifsud added 15 points for Seton Hill, who advanced to 12-10 overall and 8-8 in conference play with the win.
 
The Lady Cats are to travel to California University (Pa.) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats before hosting Gannon University Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. and Edinboro University Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Both games are to be a part of doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
