Lady Cats lose lead late; fall to Shippensburg, 87-76

in Johnstown, Pa.

Box Score 3135After trailing Pitt-Johnstown for 26 minutes, which went from the middle of the first quarter to the beginning of the fourth, Shippensburg University outscored the Lady Cats 30-13 in the last quarter to keep the Lady Raiders from being upset, winning 87-76 in PSAC crossover action Wednesday in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.

Despite the loss, four Pitt-Johnstown players scored in double digits. Olivia McCabe led the team with 16 points and six rebounds while Kayla DeCriscio added 14 points, making four of six attempted three-point shots.

Laurel O'Barto added 11 points and a team-high six assists. Ana Hollen also contributed significantly with 10 points for the Lady Cats, who have fallen to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play with the loss.

Shippensburg started the game with a 9-8 lead with 6:52 to go in the first quarter after Logan Snyder made two free throws following being fouled by Olivia Rizzo. The lead eventually grew to 13-10 when Snyder made a layup off of an assist from Lady Raider leading scorer Megan Griffith with just over six minutes remaining in the first.

Just over a minute later, a steal by O'Barto led to a three-pointer from DeCriscio to tie the game at 13. From that point, Pitt-Johnstown took control of the game for the foreseeable future. The Lady Cats ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run that was capped off by a layup from Hollen with one second left to give the team a 20-15 advantage going into the second quarter.

Pitt-Johnstown got out to a 25-18 lead after a three-pointer from Rizzo with 7:09 left to go in the half following an offensive rebound from Jamie Tabon. Shippensburg got within a point of the lead a couple of times with time winding down in the half, but a three-pointer from O'Barto and layup from Jasmine Harper saved the Lady Cats' lead, and put them up 40-35 going into the third quarter.

Harper produced six points and five rebounds, which was good enough to give her sole possession of 26th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,141 points, six ahead of Carol Mumma (1978-82). She has also now totaled 684 career rebounds, which has moved her up to 12th-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List passing Suzy Shimkus (1980-84)

The Lady Cats raced out to a 46-37 lead after four and a half minutes of second half play that was largely due to three-straight layups by McCabe to start the third quarter. The Lady Raiders eventually narrowed the gap when Snyder made a layup after a steal by Haley Scullion to cut UPJ's score to 47-45 with 4:56 left in the third. The layup also finished off a Shippensburg 8-2 run.

DeCriscio drained another shot from beyond the arc 12 seconds later that put the Lady Cats ahead 50-45. Rizzo hit another three-pointer of her own off of an assist from O'Barto to give the team a 63-54 advantage.

Shippensburg then went on a 9-0 run that extended over into the fourth quarter. The run helped the Lady Raiders regain the lead when Snyder made another layup off of an assist from Colleen Young to give their team a 64-63 edge with 8:21 remaining in the game.

Shippensburg would not let go of this lead.

After a layup from Young put the Lady Raiders up 66-63 with 6:33 to go, Shippensburg outscored the Lady Cats 21-13 the rest of the game, which was highlighted by a 9-0 run that gave Shippensburg a 75-65 lead with two minutes to go in the game.

Snyder totaled a game-high 20 points while Young produced 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to help Shippensburg advance to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play, which keeps them in first place in the PSAC East Division.

The Lady Cats are to continue a three-game homestand against conference opponents in doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats. The team is to next host Mercyhurst University Saturday at 1 p.m.
