A second straight overtime game ends in defeat for the Mountain Cats, 78-76

in Johnstown, Pa.

Jaymon Mason recorded a game-high 34 points as Edinboro University came from behind and defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 78-76 in overtime Wednesday night in PSAC West Division action in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
 
3205Nate Snodgrass led the Mountain Cats, who dropped to 14-9 overall and 10-8 in conference competition with the loss, with 21 points and six assists while Isaac Vescovi added 16 points and seven rebounds. The loss was the second straight defeat in overtime for the Mountain Cats.
 
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a 12-2 lead after 5:35 of play in the first half. The opening run was highlighted by a layup and two free throws from Snodgrass. Mikael Anderson answered for the Fighting Scots, sinking a pair of free throws after being fouled by A.J. Leahey, who recorded two fouls in the game's first eight minutes to cut the lead to eight points.
 
Pitt-Johnstown then scored six of next nine points to build an 18-5 lead when Dale Clancy made a layup off of a turnover by Henri Wade-Chatman with 9:26 remaining in the half. A layup from Vescovi with an assist from Rashaun Mosley gave the Mountain Cats a 14-point lead, 23-9 with just over seven minutes left until halftime for UPJ's biggest lead of the first half.
 
Edinboro was able to narrow the Mountain Cats lead by the end of the half, outscoring Pitt-Johnstown, 15-9 in the half's last seven minutes to the lead to nine points, 33-24. Mason hit a jumper for Edinboro with 12 seconds to play for the half's last basket.
 
The Fighting Scots embarked on a seven-point run to open the second half to get within two points of the lead, 33-31 after a minute and a half into the period. The run was capped off by a three-pointer from Michael Beck with an assist from Mason. Two minutes later, Mason made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 35 points.
 
The Mountain Cats retaliated with a 10-point run in a matter of two minutes to build a 45-35 advantage. Clancy hit two three-pointers during the offensive onslaught. Edinboro eventually narrowed the margin back to within a point by outscoring Pitt-Johnstown 12-3 until the 10:57 second half mark and was capped off by a three-pointer from amson with 11:17 left, making the score, 48-47 in favor of the Mountain Cats.
 
Tommy Scales made a pair of free throws after being fouled by Leahey to give Edinboro a 69-67 24 seconds into overtime. Leahey followed up with a layup following a timeout by Wade-Chatman to tie the game at 69 points with just under four minutes left. Scales hit another pair of after being by Leahey again to tie the game at 71 points with two minutes and a half minutes left.
 
Leahey fouled out after at the 1:59 minute mark, which lead to a pair of free throws made by Mason to give the Fighting Scots a 73-71. Two free throws from Je'land Head 1:13 left to give Edinboro a four-point lead. Jake Laravie followed up with three straight points, a layup and free throw, with 15 seconds to set Pitt-Johnstown with a point of the lead, 75-74.
 
After a steal from Clancy, and down 77-76, Snodgrass done on a loose ball with eight seconds left, but Pitt-Johnstown a timeout they didn't have, which drew a technical foul. This led to a free throw from Mason to clinch the game for Edinboro. Mosley took a last-second three-point shot, but missed as time expired.
 
Edinboro advanced to 13-9 overall and 12-7 in conference play with the victory.
 
The Mountain Cats are to play in three straight road games, traveling to Mercyhurst University Saturday at 3 p.m., Indiana University (Pa.) Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Clarion University Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. before closing out the season at home against Slippery Rock University Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. All remaining games part of doubleheaders with the Lady Cats.
