Lady Cats fall behind early on Senior Day, lose 84-54

in Johnstown, Pa.

A 26-8 first-quarter performance helped lead Gannon University to an 84-54 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC West Division action Saturday afternoon in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center on Senior Day for the Lady Cats.
 
Pitt-Johnstown, who fell to 7-16 overall and 4-13 in conference competition with the loss, were led by a team-best 14-point game from Kayla DeCriscio, and a 13-point, six rebound and two-steal performance from Jasmine Harper.
 
Harper's production gives her 1,238 career points and 722 career rebounds, putting her in 18th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring list and tied with Helen Young (1999-03) for 11th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding list.
 
The Lady Cats were outshot by Gannon throughout the game, just shooting 18-for-57 (32%) while the Lady Knights shot 29-for-55 (53%) from the field.
 
Three straight three-pointers in a matter of 36 seconds from Gannon's McKenna Shives gave the Lady Knights a 15-3 with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter. Nicole Corcoran answered, however, with a three-pointer of her own to cut the deficit to nine points at the 5:18 mark in the period.
 
By the end of the first quarter, Gannon built an 18-point lead, scoring the last points of the quarter to put them ahead, 26-8 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Lady Cats were able to cut Gannon's lead by, at one point, five points, but after 2:54 in the second period, Pitt-Johnstown trailed by 18 points once again when Jennie Thies made a layup for Gannon to make the score, 31-13 in the Lady Knights' favor.
 
Agnese Aramina was able to answer for the Lady Cats not once, but twice by way of shots from beyond the arc in the first half. The first answer came when hitting a three-pointer off of an assist from Olivia McCabe to cut their deficit to 15 points with 6:08 to go until halftime. The second time happened when she sank a three-point shot as the Lady Cats were down 21 points with 55 seconds left in the half to cut Gannon's lead to 41-23.
 
Pitt-Johnstown was also able to make the half's last bucket, 29 seconds after Aramina's three-pointer, when Kayla DeCriscio hit a three-pointer with an assist from Olivia Rizzo, ending the half with the Lady Cats trailing, 43-26.
 
Gannon's lead did not drop lower than 16 points throughout the third quarter. The Lady Knights scored six of the first ten points in the second half and finished the period with a 9-0 run, which was capped off by a three-point play from Thies with a second remaining on the clock to give Gannon a 64-39 lead heading into the game's last ten minutes.
 
Gannon's biggest advantage of the game came with 39 seconds left in the game when Gannon's Marisa Guyton made one of two free throw shots to put the Lady Knights ahead 84-54 to close out the game.
 
Thies tallied a double-double for the Lady Knights, who advanced to 15-7 overall and 13-5 in conference play. She recorded a game-high 18 points along with 10 rebounds.
 
The Lady Cats are to host Edinboro University Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the Mountain Cats before traveling to Mercyhurst University next Saturday at 1 p.m. in another doubleheader with the men's team.
