Leahey scores 1,000; Mountain Cats' season ends in quarterfinals

A.J. Leahey scored 17 points, earning his 1,000th career point, but Pitt-Johnstown's season came to a close as they fell to Indiana University (Pa.), 77-66 in the PSAC Quarterfinals Tuesday night at the Kovalchick Complex in Indiana.
 
Isaac Vescovi led the Mountain Cats with 21 points and also added eight rebounds as team finished their third season as members the PSAC with an 18-11 overall and a 13-9 in conference record.
 
Leahey produced his fourth double-double of the season (17 points and 10 rebounds) and will head into next season with 1,007 career points, which is 16 points away from cracking the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List.
 
He scored his 1,000 point on a free throw at 4:28 in the first half after being fouled by Brandon Norfleet for his 10th point of the game.
 
After starting the game down to the Crimson Hawks 4-3 at 17:20 in the first half, Pitt-Johnstown took an early lead after two straight layups from Dale Clancy and Vescovi to go ahead, 7-4 less than a minute later.
 
Indiana was able to take the lead after two straight three-pointers by Jacob Diaz with assists from Dante Lombardi. Diaz baskets kicked off what would end up being a 14-0 run that gave IUP a 20-9 lead at 12:20. He was able to make another shot from beyond the arc during span as well as Lombardi.
 
The Mountain Cats were able to slightly claw away at their deficit by scoring eight of the next 13 points to make the score, 25-18 in favor of the Crimson Hawks by the 8:12 first half mark after a pair of free throws from Vescovi.
 
Indiana soon got back out to a 10-point advantage, 30-20, after a dunk from Tevin Hanner, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with a three-point shot from Nate Snodgrass and two free-throws from Clancy to cut the lead to five points.
 
The Mountain Cats got within five points of the lead two more times through the first of the half until Leahey made a layup at 3:57 to make it a 34-31 score but the momentum was short lived as Brandon Norfleet completed a three-point play after being fouled by Mosley with 3:38 to go in the half as the Crimson Hawks increased their lead to 37-31.
 
In the first half's last three minutes, UPJ had six turnovers and committed five fouls. Indiana used those mistakes to their advantage by ending the half with a nine-point run and a 46-34 lead heading to the break.
 
Pitt-Johnstown committed 12 fouls and 11 turnovers, outnumbering the Crimson Hawks in both categories, by three fouls and six turnovers.
 
After a layup from Mosley and a three-pointer from Vescovi to start the half, Indiana's Anthony Glover hit a three-pointer to put the Crimson Hawks back ahead by 10 points, 49-39 with 18 minutes remaining.
 
Norfleet hit a shot from beyond the arc 19 seconds later to give his team a 13-point advantage. IUP's lead would not drop under 11 points until 9:35 when Vescovi hit a layup with an assist from Clancy as the Mountain Cats were still behind by nine points, 63-54.
 
Pitt-Johnstown eventually cut their deficit to six points when Mosley made a layup with 4:06 left, but they missed several crucial shots as a team in the last five minutes as Indiana scored nine of the last 13 points to help advance to the conference semifinals at West Chester University against the Golden Rams. Saturday Afternoon.
 
Norfleet had a game-high 22 points and six assists for Indiana as they advanced to 21-7 overall and 17-5 in conference play.
