Marissa Erminio had a match-high 20 kills to lead three Lady Cats who finished in double figures in kills to a 3-sets-to-1 victory over Alderson-Broaddus (WV) University in Friday's First Round of the 2016 Notre Dame (OH)/Ursuline Tournament in Pepper Pike, OH. Pitt-Johnstown evened its record at 4-4.
The Lady Cats cruised to a 25-9 win in the first set, but Alderson-Broaddus answered with a 25-20 victory in the second set. However, Pitt-Johnstown closed it out with 28-26 and 25-16 wins.
After falling behind 4-2 to open the match, the Lady Cats stormed back with a 23-5 run to take the set 25-9. Back-to-back kills from
Cambria Wierman put Pitt-Johnstown in front 9-5, before the Lady cats increased into double-digits at 16-6 on
Anna Johns and
Maura Brehl's combined block. Pitt-Johnstown kept it going and got three consecutive kills Erminio to finish the set.
In the second set, Lauren Daudelin's kill helped Alderson-Broaddus build a 12-6 lead, and the Battlers never gave up the lead on their way to a 25-20 win. Alderson-Broaddus increased it to 22-15 on a Elise Wolff service ace and wrapped-up the set on Megan Christmann's kill.
Pitt-Johnstown regained the lead in the match with a narrow 28-26 win the in third set. The Lady Cats erased an early three-point deficit to go up 17-14 on
Kendall Mahony's kills. It remained close, and Pitt-Johnstown staved off one set point to tie it at 24 on a kill from Brehl and was able to seal the 28-26 win on another kill from Erminio.
Pitt-Johnstown then sealed the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set. Mahony's service ace put the Lady Cats up 16-11, before
Logan McIntosh's ace pushed it out to 21-14. Pitt-Johnstown never looked back and used Brehl's kill to wrap-up the victory.
Erminio led the Lady Cats with 20 kills and seven digs, while Wierman had 14 kills, and Brehl added 13 kills, nine digs, and four block assists. Pitt-Johnstown also got six kills, six blocks, and four aces from Mahony.
Allison Mondorff finished with a match-high 52 set assists and 12 digs.
Devan Orr chipped in 18 digs, and McIntosh had 14 digs and a pair of aces in the victory.
The Battlers, who dropped to 0-9 on the season, were led by Madison Johnson's 12 kills and Christmann's eight kills.
