PITT-JOHNSTOWN MOUNTAIN CATS

Men's Basketball

Last second free throws lead Mountain Cats past the Rock, 59-58

Slippery Rock, Pa.

Box Score 3981Dale Clancy produced a team-high 18 points and a game-high five assists as Pitt-Johnstown defeated Slippery Rock University, 59-58, in a nail biter Wednesday night at the Morrow Fieldhouse in Slippery Rock.

Clancy proved to be the Mountain Cats clutch scorer for the night as he made the first half's final basket, tying the game on a three-pointer, and making two free-throws to win the game for his team.

Pitt-Johnstown advances to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in PSAC competition with the victory.
The game started in Slippery Rock's favor as they scored the game's first five points after Naquil Jones hit a jumper and Merdic Green made a three-point field goal within 50 seconds of the tip-off.

Clancy answered on behalf of Pitt-Johnstown with a three-pointer of his own with 17:27 left in the half, which started an 8-2 Mountain Cat run and was capped off by a layup from A.J. Leahey at 14:38 to give his team an 8-7 advantage.

Leahey's recorded seven points, eight rebounds and a single three-point field goal. Leahey stands in 11th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,370 points, sixth on the all-time rebounding list with 621, and fourth on the all-time 3-point field goals list with 215.

Khyree Wooten made a jumper 17 seconds later to put the Rock back in the lead by one point and Pitt-Johnstown not regain the lead for another eight minutes. It was not until Josh Wise drained a three-pointer on an assist from Levi Masua with 6:31 to go until halftime that UPJ was leading, 22-21 after trailing 21-15 a minute and a half before.

The lead would change three more times before halftime, but a basket from beyond the arc from Dale Clancy at 1:33 tied the game at 29 points heading into the second half.
Not much changed after halftime as the lead changed six more times in the final 20 minutes. The point differential did not stretch past four points until the 7:16 mark when a layup by Wooten put Slippery Rock in control, 52-46.

It was not until a jumper from Green at 3:51, giving the Rock a 56-50 edge, that Slippery Rock went cold on the offensive side of the ball. A pair of free throws from Jordan Marrow at 2:23 were the only points scored for the home team the rest of the game.

Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Rock, 9-2 in the game's last three minutes and was highlighted by a pair of free throws made by Clancy after being fouled by Wooten with five seconds left. Those points proved to be the game-clincher for the Mountain Cats.

The Mountain Cats are to return home Jan. 21, hosting Seton Hill University in a PSAC West Division doubleheader, starting with the women's game at 1 p.m., before playing three straight road meetings against Shippensburg University, Clarion University and Gannon University.
