Second Half Penalty Kick Goal Leads Vulcans to 2-1 PSAC Win Over Mountain Cats

Johnstown, PA

4605D.J. Vogelman's goal in the opening minutes gave the Mountain Cats an early lead, but California University (PA) scored a pair of unanswered goals, including a penalty kick by Anthony Papageorgiou nine minutes into the second half, to give the Vulcans a 2-1 PSAC victory, Wednesday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
 
Pitt-Johnstown, which fell to 0-13-1 overall and 0-9-0 in conference-play, took the lead just over two minutes into the match when Vogelman finished Kevin Paye's cross in front of the net.
 
California (PA) evened the score 11 minutes later on a Mark Wolf goal, before Papageorgiou beat Mountain Cat goalkeeper Nate Kleya on a penalty kick in the 54th minute.
 
Kleya faced 23 Vulcans' shots made seven saves for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Lucas Exner played the first half in goal for California (PA) and allowed one goal and made one save.  Joseph Valeriano played the final 45 minutes and kept the Mountain Cats off the scoreboard.  Valeriano saw five Mountain Cat shots and made three saves.
 
With the win, California (PA) moved to 2-11-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the PSAC.
   
The Mountain Cats travel to a PSAC match at nationally-ranked Millersville University on Saturday, before celebrating Senior Day with a non-conference match against Washington Adventist (MD) University on October 27 at 1 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
