Maura Brehl had a team-high nine kills and two blocks, but it wasn't enough, as Millersville University dealt the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team a 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 PSAC sweep Saturday afternoon in Millersville. The Mountain Cats slipped to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in the PSAC Central Division.
Millersville ran out to a 9-3 opening set lead on a pair of Kelci Ceriani kills and two Pitt-Johnstown errors and cruised to a 25-19 win. After falling behind early kills by
Cambria Wierman and Brehl cut the deficit to four, but the Marauders answered with a kill from Katie Laughman to close out a 9-3 run to increase it to 22-12. Millersville then got a kill from Lindsey Blevins', and a service ace from Laughman to wrap it up.
Millersville held the momentum to begin the second set and opened-up an 11-6 advantage on Ceriani's ace. The Mountain Cats kept it close and tied it at 19 on Brehl's kill and a Marauders' attack error. Kills by
Marissa Erminio and
Caitlin Vrabel put Pitt-Johnstown in front 22-10, but Millersville outscored the Mountain Cats 5-1 down the stretch to take a 2-set lead with the 25-23 win on Kristin Sellers' kill.
In the third set, neither team was able to build a lead larger than two until Millersville broke a 14 all tie with an 11-3 run to close out the sweep with the 25-17 victory. Blevins' kill, followed by a Pitt-Johnstown attack error, put the Marauders up 19-15. Millersville increased it to 23-16 on another kill from Blevins, before two straight Mountain Cat attack errors gave the Marauders the sweep.
Along with Brehl,
Noelle Carota had eight kills and a block for Pitt-Johnstown. Wierman finished with six kills and 13 digs, and Erminio had six kills and seven digs. The Mountain Cats also got five kills and a block from Vrabel.
Allison Mondoff collected a team-high 14 set assists and 11 digs, and
J.C. Longeville chipped-in 13 assists and six digs.
Devan Orr had 24 digs, and
Coco Kordenbrock had three service aces for the Mountain Cats.
Blevins tallied a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs to lead three Marauders who ended the day with double digit kills and help Millersville improve to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC Central. In addition to Blevins, Erin Harman had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Haley Butler had 10 kills and two blocks.
Pitt-Johnstown returns home to host conference matches in the Sports Center against California (PA) on Friday at 7 p.m. and Seton Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
