Dale Clancy hit eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points to help the Mountain Cats erase a nine-point deficit in a 76-66 come-from-behind PSAC Crossover win at Lock Haven on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC Western Division.
Marques Jackson's 3-pointer four minutes into the game helped Lock Haven double-up the Mountain Cats, 12-6, in the early going.
Pitt-Johnstown cut it to one on Clancy's 3-pointer and then to 14-13 on a basket from
Levi Masua, before
Josh Wise's jumper at 11:34 gave the Mountain Cats their first lead of the afternoon.
The Bald Eagles responded with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes, capped by a pair off Amir Hinton dunks, to give Lock Haven its largest lead of the half at 26-17.
The Mountain Cats came right back with nine unanswered points of their own. Clancy's third 3-pointer of the first half ended the Bald Eagles' run, before two straight
Olando King, Jr. buckets and one from Masua got Pitt-Johnstown to within two at 28-26 with 3:46 left.
Lock Haven pushed it back out to five, but Wise and
Isaac Vescovi answered for the Mountain cats to narrow the deficit to 35-33 at the break.
After Vescovi tied it on Pitt-Johnstown's first possession of the second half, Lock Haven got a layup from Matt Cerruti to get the lead back out to six. However, Clancy scored 11 straight points, including three more 3-pointers and Masua scored in the paint to close a 13-2 Mountain Cat run that put Pitt-Johnstown back in front, 48-43 with just under 15 minutes to play.
The Bald Eagles cut it to one on two occasions, with the last coming at 9:12 on Cerruti's free-throws, but Clancy's eighth 3-pointer pushed the Mountain Cat lead to 68-60 with 3:48 remaining and Pitt-Johnstown went on to the 10-point victory.
Clancy scored 30 points on 10-16 shooting and 8-13 from 3-point range to lead three Mountain Cat double-figure scorers. Vescovi finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Wise collected 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Pitt-Johnstown also got eight points and nine rebounds from King, and six points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Masua.
The Mountain Cats, who held a 42-31 advantage on the glass shot 52.6% (30-57) from the floor, 10-25 from 3-point range, and 6-122 from the free-throw line. Lock Haven was held to 42.3% (30-71) shooting, including just 3-20 from behind the 3-point line. The Bald Eagles were also 3-6 from the charity stripe.
With his 30 points, Clancy is 20
th on the scoring list (1,139 points), fourth on the assists list (433), and sixth on the 3-point field goals list (175). Vescovi currently stands in 29
th-place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List with 1,020 points.
Hinton's 23 points led the Bald Eagles, Lock Haven, which fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC Eastern Division, also got 14 points from Ra'eese Hunt and 13 points from Jackson.
Following the holidays, the Mountain Cats visit Clarion on December 30, before hosting a PSAC doubleheaders with the women's team on January 3 against Indiana (PA) and January 6 against Gannon.
