
Emily Hartley and Kayla Klock each scored second half goals to break a scoreless first half tie and lead Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University to a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Pitt-Johnstown women's soccer team, Tuesday night in Wheeling, W.Va. With the loss, the Mountain Cats dropped to 1-5-1.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, despite Pitt-Johnstown outshooting Wheeling Jesuit 10-2 in the first 45 minutes.
However, the Cardinals were able to break the ice nine minutes into the second half when Hartley shot from 35 yards out beat Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper
Leigh Appolonia to give Wheeling Jesuit a 1-0 lead.
Wheeling Jesuit threatened to increase its lead in the 73
rd minute, but Appolonia made a save on Klock's penalty kick to keep the Mountain Cats within one.
Klock was eventually able to add Wheeling Jesuit's second goal when she finished Jenny Soegaard's assist eight minutes.
Hannah Thompson did the rest in goal for the Cardinals. Thompson faced 16 Pitt-Johnstown shots and made six saves to preserve the shutout.
Appolonia saw seven Wheeling Jesuit shots, made four saves, but allowed both goals.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 2-4-0 on the year.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC match against West Chester University on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field, before traveling to Mercyhurst University for another conference match on Sunday.
