
Seton Hill outscored Pitt-Johnstown by 18 in the second quarter to erase a four-point deficit on its way to a 79-50 PSAC victory over the Cats, Saturday afternoon in Greensburg.
Gabrielle Smith's 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds led Pitt-Johnstown, which slipped to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in the PSAC.
Olivia McCabe scored five early points to put Pitt-Johnstown on top, before the Cats used an 8-0 run, capped by two
Tori Moreland free-throws and a Smith basket, to increase the lead to 15-7 with three minutes left in the opening quarter. Seton Hill answered with cut it to 15-11 on Cheyenne Trest's basket to close out the quarter.
Seton Hill took control in the second quarter and outscored the Cats, 23-5, to build a 14-point halftime advantage. The Griffins quickly tied it on Trest's free-throw, before extending the run to 12-1 to go up 23-16 on Jenna Kaufman's basket at 3:38. After Smith's layup narrowed Pitt-Johnstown's gap to five, Halie Torris hit a 3-pointer and Kaufman accounted for the final eight points to give Seton Hill a 34-20 lead at the break.
Baskets by McCabe and Smith midway through the third quarter got the Cats back to within eight, but Seton hill outscored Pitt-Johnstown, 12-0, to push the lead out to 20 at 53-23 with 46 seconds remaining.
Maurina Nunn and
Mia Oterson each connected on a pair of free-throws down the stretch to cut it to 53-37 entering the final quarter.
The Griffins continued to build on its lead in the final period and coasted to the 29-point victory.
Smith finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and McCabe added 12 points and four rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown. The Cats also got eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists from Nunn and six points and four rebounds from Moreland.
McCabe currently stands in 29
th place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,071 points and 12
th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 735 rebounds.
Pitt-Johnstown was held to just 37.0% (20-54) shooting, including just 1-8 from 3-point range. The Cats were also 9-16 from the free-throw line. Seton Hill ended the afternoon shooting 45.8% (27-59) from the floor, 6-22 from behind the 3-point line, and 19-25 from the charity stripe.
Kaufman led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds, and Trest chipped-in 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists to help the Griffins make it six straight wins and improved to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the PSAC.
Pitt-Johnstown returns home to the Sports Center to host a PSAC doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against West Chester University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to a conference game at Gannon University on Saturday.
