Isaac Vescovi, the current PSAC West Player of the Week, scored a game-high 24 points, but Gannon erased an 11-point first half deficit and dealt Pitt-Johnstown a 72-62 PSAC Western Division loss, Saturday afternoon in Erie. The Mountain Cats had their four-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 10-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
Gannon took a 10-6 lead four minutes into the game on 3-pointers from Matt Johnson and Zay Jackson, but Pitt-Johnstown responded a 21-6 run over the next nine minutes to build an 11-point advantage of its own.
Baskets by Vescovi and
Olando King, Jr. gave the lead back to the Mountain Cats, before
Dale Clancy hit a pair of 3-pointers and
Drew Magestro added one from behind the arc to close the run and put Pitt-Johnstown in front 27-16 with 6:44 left in the half.
The Golden Knights answered right back and outscored the Mountain Cats 15-5 to cut it to 32-31 on buckets from Jair Green and Gerrell Williams at 1:42.
Magestro and Clancy followed with 3-pointers to help Pitt-Johnstown maintain the lead, before Gannon was able to narrow it to 37-36 at the half on William's layup and free-throw with 12 seconds left.
Gannon quickly regained the lead for the first time since the 12-minute mark of the first half on Evan Phoenix's dunk 1:42 into the second half.
The Golden Knights then matched their earlier four-point lead on Damon Miraud's tip-in, before Jackson's 3-pointer with 9:43 to play increased it to 53-47.
Gannon pushed it out to 62-53 on Phoenix's layup and free-throw at 5:45, but Pitt-Johnstown came back to get it down to four on three occasions, with the last coming on Vescovi's bucket at 1:38.
However, the Golden Knights extended back out to eight and got a pair of free-throws from Jackson with 24 seconds left to seal the 10-point victory.
Along with Vescovi's 24 points, the Mountain Cats also got 16 points and six assists from Clancy, and 12 points on 4-5 3-point shooting from Magestro. King, Jr. had six points and three rebounds, and
Josh Wise grabbed nine rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown.
Clancy currently stands in 13
th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,323 points), fourth on the assists list (487), and fifth on the 3-point field goals list (209). Vescovi is 16
th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown Scoring List with 1,245 points.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 42.1% (24-57) from the field, 9-26 from behind the arc, and 5-6 from the free-throw line. Gannon, which held a 36-23 advantage on the glass, finished the day shooting 54.4% (31-57) from the floor, 4-8 from 3-point range, and 6-8 from the charity stripe.
Phoenix's 19 points and game-high 12 rebounds led the Golden Knights to their 10 win in their last 11 games. Miraud had 12 points and six rebounds, and Jackson had 10 points for Gannon, which improved to 14-6 overall and 10-4 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown returns home to host PSAC doubleheaders with the women's team against Edinboro University on Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. and Clarion University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
