Dale Clancy's driving layup with less than a second to play forced overtime, but Edinboro went on to earn an 87-72 PSAC victory over the Mountain Cats, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Clancy's 24 points led the way for Pitt-Johnstown, which slipped to 10-10 overall and 8-8 in the PSAC Western Division.
Jaymon Mason's layup five minutes into the game gave the Fighting Scots a five-point lead, but Pitt-Johnstown came back with a 15-6 run over the next four minutes to take a four-point lead of its own.
Clancy's 3-pointer tied it a 12, before a basket in the paint from
Levi Masua and a pair of Clancy free-throws at 11:32 put the Mountain Cats in front, 21-17.
Edinboro regained the lead by three on a Trey Staunch free-throw with 7:14 left in the opening half, but Pitt-Johnstown answered again. This time, the Mountain Cats got 3-pointers from Clancy and
Drew Magestro to build their largest lead at 37-30, before Staunch's lay-up and free-throw with 27 seconds remaining got Edinboro back to within four at the break.
Neither team held a lead larger than four until the Fighting Scots used a 14-6 spurt, capped by Keshawn Liggins' convention 3-point play and five straight points from Mason, to go up 60-53 with 8:07 left in regulation.
After
Josh Wise's jumper at 1:46 gave the lead back to the Mountain Cats, Liggins tied it at 70 and Mason's free-throws with eight seconds put Edinboro up 72-70.
With one possession left, Clancy drove the length of the court and sank a contested layup with just 2-tenths of a second to play that tied the game for the 17
th time and forced overtime.
However, it was all Fighting Scots in the extra period. Anthony Coleman's layup to begin the overtime put Edinboro back in front and the Fighting Scots went on to outscore the Mountain Cats 15-0 to seal the victory.
Clancy finished with 24 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead three Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Wise had 17 points and six rebounds, and Masua collected 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. The Mountain Cats also got eight points from
Isaac Vescovi, and four points, nine rebounds, and four assists from
Olando King, Jr.
Clancy currently stands in 12
th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,347 points), fourth on the assists list (492), and fifth on the 3-point field goals list (213). Vescovi is 15
th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown Scoring List with 1,253 points.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 35.5% (27-76) from the field, 8-27 from 3-point range, and 10-13 from the free-throw line. Edinboro, which held a 44-37 advantage in rebounding, ended the night shooting 50.8% (33-65) from the floor, 5-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 16-19 from the charity stripe.
Liggins' game-highs of 29 points and 16 rebounds led three Edinboro double figure scorers. Mason had 25 points and five rebounds, and Anthony Coleman added 16 points and five rebounds to help the Fighting Scots improve to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC doubleheader with the women's team against Clarion University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., before traveling to a conference game at Indiana (PA) next Wednesday.
