No. 15 Edinboro Pulls Away for 76-53 Win Over Pitt-Johnstown

Johnstown, PA

4911Fifteenth-ranked Edinboro University outscored Pitt-Johnstown 22-9 in the second quarter on its way to pulling away for a 76-53 PSAC victory over the Cats, Wednesday night in the sports Center.  Gabrielle Smith's 13 points and seven rebounds paced Pitt-Johnstown, which fell to 8-13 overall and 5-11 in the PSAC Western Division.

Pit-Johnstown kept it close early.  After Jontay Walton's jumper at the 3:24 mark of the opening quarter gave the Fighting Scots a 12-6 advantage, the Cats came back to cut it to 12-10 on Tori Moreland's basket, before Smith's layup and free-throw with 22 seconds left in the quarter kept it a two-point game at 17-12.

Moreland then hit a 3-pinter to begin the second quarter that put the Cats up one, but it was all Edinboro the rest of the way.

The Fighting Scots went on to outscore Pitt-Johnstown by 16 over the final 9:31 of the quarter to build a 39-24 halftime lead.  Ayana Vaughn's 3-pointer and Walton's bucket at 4:29 pushed it into double figures.  Edinboro then got a 3-pointer from Michaela Barnes with 1:30 remaining to make it a 15-point game at the break.

Baskets from Ciara Rosten and Michelle Jahn four minutes into the third quarter put the Fighting Scots in front, 47-28, before Pitt-Johnstown narrowed it to 14 on Smith's lay-up at 2:45.

However, Edinboro extended it to 26 at 65-39 on a basket from Barnes with 3:54 to play and went on to the 23-point victory.

Along with Smith's 13 points and seven rebounds, Pitt-Johnstown also got 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds from Olivia McCabe and 10 points and seven rebounds from Nicole Olkosky.  Moreland finished with eight points, and Alexis Hartwick had five points, five rebounds, and three assists for the Cats.

McCabe currently stands in 29th place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,101 points and eighth on the All-Time Rebounding List with 761 rebounds.

Pitt-Johnstown was held to just 34.5% (19-55) shooting, including 4-12 from behind the 3-point arc.  The Cats were also 11-16 from the free-throw line.  Edinboro shot 46.4% (32-69) from the floor, 6-19 from 3-point range, and 6-10 from the charity stripe.

Rosten's game-highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds and Walton's 14 points led four Fighting Scots who scored in double figures.

With the win, Edinboro improved to 17-2 overall and 13-2 in the PSAC Western Division.

Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC doubleheader with the men's team against Clarion University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., before traveling to a conference game at 13th-ranked Indiana (PA) next Wednesday.
