Edinboro Hits Late Free-throws to Down Mountain Cats, 82-78

Edinboro, PA

4981Keyshawn Liggins made three free-throws and Mike Beck added one in the final minute and Edinboro University held on for a narrow, 82-78, PSAC victory over the Mountain Cats, Monday night in Edinboro.  Josh Wise had 19 points and Isaac Vescovi scored 18 points to lead Pitt-Johnstown, which fell to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown used seven early points from Dale Clancy and a jumper from Wise to climb out to a seven-point lead seven minutes into the game.
 
Edinboro scored the next six to knot it at 13 on Liggins' basket, before Trey Staunch's layup gave the lead back to the Fighting Scots, 22-21, at the 6:56 mark.
 
After Vescovi's bucket gave the lead right back to the Mountain Cats, Edinboro went on to outscore Pitt-Johnstown, 17-6, over the final six minutes of the half.  Jaryn Simpson connected on a 3-pointer at 3:51 to increase it to seven, and Anthony Coleman scored the final five points of the half, including a 3-pointer as 4979time expired, to put the Fighting Scots up, 39-29, at the break.
 
Pitt-Johnstown narrowed it to five early in the second half on two Levi Masua free-throws and an Olando King, Jr. dunk, but Edinboro countered with a 10-2 run, capped by Jaymon Mason's 3-pointer and Liggins' layup, to build the lead to 52-39 with 15:23 to play.
 
The Mountain Cats stormed back to retake the lead with a 20-6 run over the next six minutes.  Vescovi's bucket got Pitt-Johnstown to within one, and Levi Masua finished a conventional 3-point play to put Pitt-Johnstown back in front 59-58 at 9:16.
 
It stayed close the rest of the way.  Neither team held more than a four-point advantage.  With 1:13 left, Liggins hit two free-throws to put Edinboro up 80-78.  Pitt-Johnstown had two chances to tie or regain the lead, but Viscovi's jumper would not fall with 11 seconds left and Clancy wasn't able to connect on a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining, and the Fighting Scots held on for the four-point win.
 
Wise finished with 19 points and six rebounds, while Vescovi had 18 points and six rebounds to pace Pitt-Johnstown.  Clancy collected 15 points and six assists, Masua had 11 points and six rebounds.  The Mountain Cats also got eight points and eight rebounds from king, Jr.
 
Clancy currently stands in 17th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,211 points), fourth on the assists list (451), and sixth on the 3-point field goals list (187).  Vescovi is 22nd-place on the Pitt-Johnstown Scoring List with 1,101 points.
 
Both teams shot the ball well.  The Mountain Cats shot 54.0% (34-63), and Edinboro shot 48.4% (31-64).  However, the Fighting Scots were 9-27 from 3-point range and 11-14 from the free-throw line, while Pitt-Johnstown made 5-16 from behind the 3-point line and 5-6 from the charity stripe.
 
Liggins had a game-high 21 points to held Edinboro improve 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the PSAC.  Mayson (17 points), Coleman (12 points), and Alex Jay (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Fighting Scots.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to a PSAC game at California University (PA) on Wednesday, before returning home to host a conference doubleheader with the women's team against Mercyhurst University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center.
