Maura Brehl's match-high 16 kills, five blocks, and 12 digs led Pitt-Johnstown to three double-digit wins in a four-set PSAC victory over Lock Haven University, Friday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC Central Division.
The Mountain Cats took the first two sets 25-9 and 25-10, before Lock haven answered with a 25-15 win to stay alive. However, Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a big lead and went on to a 25-11 fourth-set victory.
Pitt-Johnstown dominated the opening set. The Mountain Cats raced out to a 16-6 lead on back-to-back
Maura Brehl kills, then closed out the lopsided 25-9 win with a combined block from Brehl and
Anna Johns and a kill by Johns.
It was more of the same in the second set. Pitt-Johnstown scored the first six points of the set to ignite a 16-2 run that was capped by another Brehl/Johns block and a
J.C. Longeville service ace. The Mountain Cats never let the Bald Eagles get closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Rebecca Miller's kill, followed by Miller's service ace closed out the 25-10 victory.
Lock Haven turned it around and jumped out to an 8-3 lead on Gabrielle Stick kill to begin the third sed. The Bald Eagles extended it to 20-10 with a Breanna McDonald/Stick block, and narrowed the gap to 2-sets-to-1 with a 25-15 victory on consecutive Pitt-Johnstown errors.
However, Pitt-Johnstown quickly regained the momentum with a
Tatiana Pitcher's kill and a Lock Haven attack error that helped the Mountain Cats open-up an 11-4 lead. Pitt-Johnstown followed with seven more points, including a
Erin Carmody ace that pushed the lead out to 18-4, before the Mountain Cats sealed the four-set with a 25-11 on behind Johns' kill and another Bald Eagle attack error.
Along with Brehl,
Caitlin Vrabel had nine kills, three aces, and a block and Johns had six kills and five blocks for the Mountain Cats. Miller tallied five kills, while
Noelle Carota had four kills, 11 digs, and a pair of blocks.
Longeville finished with a match-high 37 set assists to go along with three aces and seven digs, and Carmody had three aces and a match-high 16 digs.
Stick's 11 kill, seven digs, and two blocks paced Lock Haven, which fell to 8-11 overall and 3-7 in the PSAC Central.
Pitt-Johnstown host a PSAC match against Bloomsburg on Saturday at 1 p.m., then travels to conference matches at Gannon and Mercyhurst next weekend.
