Brehl, Carota Lead Volleyball to Four-Set PSAC Win Over Edinboro

5960Three-straight PSAC Central Volleyball Athlete of the Week Maura Brehl had a match-high 17 kills and Noelle Carota added 14 kills to lead the Pitt-Johnstown  to a 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18 PSAC victory over Edinboro, Friday night in the sports Center.  The Mountain Cats improved to 15-11 overall and 9-5 in the PSAC Central Division.
 
Caitlin Vrabel and Maura Brehl's combined block, followed by a kill from Vrabel gave Pitt-Johnstown a 12-8 lead midway through the opening set.  Edinboro cut it to a pair on three occasions with the last coming at 18-16 on Paige Morris' kill and a Mountain Cat attack error, but Pitt-Johnstown scored the next seven on Noelle Carota's serve, including three straight service aces that wrapped-up the 25-16 win.
 
In the second set, the Mountain Cats erased an early two-point deficit to go in front, 10-8, on kills by Vrabel and Carota, before the Fighting Scots regained the lead 13-12.  Edinboro never trailed again.  The Fighting Scots increased it 23-18 with a Cierah Jackson kill, then evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-21 victory Morris' kill.
 
Brehl's kill put Pitt-Johnstown up 12-8 in the third set, but Edinboro clawed back to even it at 14 on a pair of Mountain Cat errors.  Pitt-Johnstown quickly regained control and outscored Edinboro, 11-3, to take the 25-17 win.  5961Vrabel's kill increased it to five, and Brehl's kill and an Anna Johns/Brehl block capped the run and the set.
 
Edinboro jumped out to a 6-2 fourth-set lead on Morris kill.  Pitt-Johnstown battled back to knot it at seven, then took its first lead of the set at 12-11 with a kill from Brehl and a Fighting Scots' ball handling error.  The Mountain Cats held the momentum and pushed it out to 17-12 on Johns' kill.  Edinboro never got closer than three the rest of the way and Pitt-Johnstown finished the four-set victory with a 25-18 win on kills by Brehl and Carota.
 
Brehl finished with 17 kills, 11 digs, and three blocks, while Carota had 11 kills, 10 digs, three service aces, and a pair of blocks to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  The Mountain Cats also got eight kills and three blocks from Vrabel, six kills and four blocks from Johns, and four kills and two aces from Grace Miller.
 
J.C. Longeville led the way for Pitt-Johnstown with 36 set assists, while Erin Carmody finished with a match-high 13 digs.
 
Edinboro, which fell to 13-11 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC Northwest Division, was led by Sally Sterkel's 14 kills and four blocks and Jackson's eight kills and two blocks.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will celebrate Senior Day with a PSAC match against Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center, before closing out the regular season with a home conference match against Shippensburg on Tuesday and PSAC Road matches at Bloomsburg and Lock Haven next weekend.
