
After suffering a tough, 6-5. Loss in Sunday's first game of a doubleheader at the University of Charleston (WV),
Ty Treese's pinch hit, solo home run in the top of the seventh inning keyed a three-run rally to help Pitt-Johnstown to a 3-2 victory. The Mountain Cats are now 2-7 on the season.
In game one, Charleston scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a one-run deficit in the 6-5 win.
Steven Davis' two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first inning chased home Colby Johnson to give Charleston an early 1-0 lead, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly tied it in the second.
Tyler Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on
Tanner Cook's RBI single.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead with a run in its half of the second, but Pitt Johnstown got to Charleston starter Kaleb Kinder for three runs in the third. Back-to-back doubles from
Jack Shirk and
Dan Clark tied it.
Scott Thompson's RBI single scored Clark to give the Mountain Cats their first lead, and
Cameron Gerhard's RBI doubled down the right field line made it 4-2
Pitt-Johnstown added an unearned run in the fifth, but Charleston came back with two in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 5-4.
However, two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Ryan Hunt's RBI single and Austin Hathaway's sacrifice fly gave the Golden Eagles the 6-5 victory.
Clark and Cook each had two hits and an RBI for the Mountain Cats.
Jason Baranek took the loss after allowing two runs in the bottom of the sixth in relief of starter
Brady Walker. Walker got the no decision after surrendering four runs on eight hits over the first five-plus innings.
In game two, Treese's homer started a three-run seventh-inning rally that lifted the Mountain Cats to the 3-2 victory.
Charleston scored a run in the bottom of the first, and one in the fifth on Johnson's fielder's choice to take a 2-0 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown got a run back in the seventh on Treese's pinch-hit home run, then loaded the bases with two outs and took the lead when
Tyler Smith and
Ben Foose both scored on a wild pitch.
Along with Treese's home run, Pitt-Johnstown also got doubles from
Jack Shirk and
Zach Zinn.
Braxton Roxby picked-up his first collegiate win in relief after holding the Golden Eagles scoreless on one hit over the final two innings. Roxby also struck out three and walked one.
Dylan Heid pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and surrendered two runs on three hits, while fanning eight and walking three.
With the split, Charleston is now 3-6.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to East Stroudsburg for a four-game non-conference series next weekend, before making its 2018 home debut at Point Stadium with a doubleheader against Shippensburg on March 16.
