
After sweeping a doubleheader from Clarion to begin a four-game PSAC Western Division series at Point Stadium on Friday, the Mountain Cats traveled to Pullman park in butler and suffered a 7-6 extra innings loss and an 8-4 setback to the Golden Eagles on Sunday.
Tyler Smith collected five hits for Pitt-Johnstown, which slipped to 11-26 overall and 8-16 in conference-play.
In the opener, Clarion rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at six, before winning it with a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.
Pitt-Johnstown built a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from
Tanner Cook and a two-run single from
Dan Clark.
Clarion responded with two in the bottom of the fifth, but the Mountain Cats got them right back with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
The Golden Eagles scored three runs to tie it in the bottom of the seventh off of Pitt-Johnstown reliever
Brad Coleman. Chandler Palyas' belted a two-run homer and Cole Shaffer scored on a Mountain Cat throwing error.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Palyas led off Clarion's bottom of the ninth with a double, moved to third on a ground out and score the game-winner on a wild pitch.
Smith went 3-for-4, and
Cameron Gerhard had two hits and drove in two for Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountain Cats also got two RBI from Clark and a pair of hits from
Scott Thompson.
Braxton Roxby took the loss for Pitt-Johnstown and slipped to 1-3 after allowing a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Dylan Heid started and held the Golden Eagles tow three runs (2 earned) on three hits over the first five innings. Heid also fanned eight and walked three.
In game two, Clarion broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fifth and went on to the 8-4 victory.
Clarion jumped out to a 2-0 second inning lead, but RBI singles from
Nemo Trexler and Thompson in the Pitt-Johnstown fourth tied it at two.
The Golden Eagles rebuilt their lead to 6-2 with four runs in the fifth off of Mountain Cat reliever
Raymond Watt.
Jack Shirk led off the Mountain Cats' sixth with a solo home run to left, and
Boston Bradley drove home Smith with a base hit to cut the gap to 6-4.
However, Mike Connell connected for a two-run homer in the Golden Eagles' half of the sixth to extend the lead back out to four.
Along with Shirk's home run, Pitt-Johnstown got two hits and an RBI from Trexler and Thompson and two hits apiece from Clark and Smith.
Watt took the loss in relief of starter
Joel Colledge and slipped to 1-2 after surrendering four runs in 1/3 of an inning. College pitched the first four innings and gave up two runs (1 earned) on five hits, while striking out six and walking one.
With the sweep, the Golden Eagles are now 11-31 overall and 4-20 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Bloomsburg for a non-conference game on Tuesday and to Mercyhurst for a conference doubleheader on Friday. The Mountain Cats will then close out the 2018 regular season and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against the Lakers at 1 and 3 p.m. at Point Stadium.
