No. 7 Mountain Cat Wrestlers Suffer 22-15 PSAC Setback at Gannon

Erie, PA

6445A banged-up seventh-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestling squad made the trip to Erie for a PSAC match-up with Gannon on Wednesday and got an impressive win by Brendan Howard over 11th-ranked Jacob Dunlap, but the Golden Knights were able to upset the Mountain Cats, 22-15.  Pitt-Johnstown had its 24-match PSAC winning streak snapped and slipped to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

With four starters out of the lineup, the Mountain Cats got off to good start with Howard's 4-2 decision over Dunlap, but Gannon quickly took a 4-3 lead when Austin Hertel won an 11-3 major decision over Matt Siszka at 133 lbs.

After third-ranked Joey Alessandro defeated Nick Young, 9-3, at 141 lbs. to give the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown, the Golden Knights won the next three to build a 19-6 advantage.  Dom Means pinned Justin Smith, who filled in for top-ranked Chris Eddins at 141 lbs., 34 seconds into the opening period, and Evan Fisher held on for a 10-9 decision over Corey Falleroni at 149 lbs.  Gannon then extended the lead to 13 when Connor Day pinned Gage Thomas at 4:50.

Brock Biddle's 8-6 win at 174 lbs., got the Mountain Cats back to within 10 at 19-9, but Anthony Williamson earned a 4-1 win over Mike Geyer at 184 lbs. that increased the Golden Knight's lead to 22-9 and put the match out of reach.

Pitt-Johnstown got a 7-4 decision by No. 6 Levi Niebauer over Freddie Nixon at 197 lbs. and a 2-0 decision from Tyler Oliver over Keith Swartley at 285 lbs. to set the final at 22-15.

With the win, Gannon improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC.

Pitt-Johnstown hosts a PSAC match against Seton Hill on Friday, before celebrating Senior Night with a conference match against Shippensburg on February 1.  Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
