Box Score
Donovian Maxfield's highly contested, game winning 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds propelled the Mountain Cats passed the University of Sacred Heart, 62-61.
Â
Coming off a hard fought game against UPR-Bayamon, the Mountain Cats entered Sacred Hearts home gymnasium and soon found itself in a dog fight for 40 minutes.
Â
Having only 10 hours to recoup after last nights win, UPJ started today's matchup without senior captain and All Conference Player,
Josh Wise. Wise was replaced by
Joe Batt in the starting lineup, but the Mountain Cats received plenty of production from fellow reserves,
Jared Jakubick, and
Donovian Maxfield.
Â
In the early young, neither team could find their rhythm offensively as the score stayed deadlocked at 16-16 twelve minutes in. Following a brief timeout, sacred heart found their offense and connected on back to back three pointers to give them their largest lead of the afternoon, 22-16.
Â
UPJ soon answered when
Fred Mulbah found
Marcin Wiszomirski underneath for an uncontested basket. Coupled with intense defense, the Mountain Cats pushed ahead of Sacred Heart and took halftime leading 30-24.
Â
Following the break, Sacred Heart caught fire from downtown and quickly erased the deficit with four consecutive 3 pointers. Trailing 36-30 and unable to find their groove, Pitt Johnstown received a much needed spark from
Drew Magestro and
Jared Jakubick, as both connected on a pair of 3 pointers to stop the drought.
Â
The final ten minutes of the contest was not for the faint of heart. Neither team was willing to concede the win and both were determined to raise their hands after the final buzzer. Sacred Heart found themselves with the momentum as they took a 60-59 lead with 20 seconds remaining.
Â
With no other choice but to foul, UPJ sent Sacred Heart to the charity stripe. Sacred Heart would split the pair of FT's which ultimately set the stage for Maxfield's heroics. In transition off the missed free throw,
John Paul Kromka found himself swarmed underneath by multiple SH defenders, but made a heady play to find Maxfield for the game winner.
