McGrath and Smith Combine for 51 on Senior Day to Push Past Slippery Rock

62906288The Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team defeated Slippery Rock on Senior Day, 65-61 at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center. Prior to the game, Head Coach Mike Drahos and the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball program recognized this year's seniors, Torie Moreland, and Laurel O'Barto.  The Mountain Cats, who also clinched a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament, improved to 13-14 overall and 9-11 in conference play. Slippery Rock fell to 10-16 overall and 9-11 in the PSAC.
 
The Mountain Cats were led by Alli McGrath's 28-Points on 10-for-20 from the field and 6-for-12 from behind the arc. Gabrielle Smith ended the day scoring 23-points, finishing 3-for-5 from the field and 17-18 from the free-throw line.
 
The Mountain Cats opened up an early, 9-0 lead thanks to three straight three-pointers from McGrath. Midway through the first quarter, Nicole Olkosky 's jumper made it 13-7, assisted by Smith. Slippery Rock closed the first quarter on a mini 4-0 run, to cut into the Mountain Cats lead and make it 18-15.
 
Slippery Rock grabbed their first lead of the game with 5:44 left in the second quarter thanks to a Lee Ann Gibson and-one. The Mountain Cats answered on the next possession to take the lead on a McGrath layup, assisted by Smith. McGrath's layup with 12 seconds remaining, gave the Mountain Cats the 29-27 lead heading into halftime.
 
Slippery Rock tied the game at 35 when Brooke Hinderliter hit a jumper, assisted by Morgan Henderson.  The Mountain Cats pushed their lead to 47-43 when McGrath knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:53 left in the third.
 
Pitt-Johnstown made it 53-48 with 6:36 left in the first half on a pair of Smith free throws. After a pair of Ciara Patterson free throws, Smith found an open Moreland to make it 56-50 with 5:22 left.
 
Slippery Rock cut into the Mountain Cats lead, on a pair of Patterson free throws, to make it 60-58.
 
Smith sealed the victory for the Mountain Cats going 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 25 seconds.
 
The Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team is scheduled to be back in action against Mercyhurst Wednesday at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
