No. 5 Mountain Cats Claim Share of PSAC Title With 30-9 Win at No. 16 Mercyhurst

6438Steve Edwards and fourth-ranked Levi Niebauer each won by fall to help the fifth-ranked Mountain Cat wrestling team clinch at least a share of the 2018-19 PSAC Dual Meet Championship with a convincing 30-9 victory at Mercyhurst University, Friday evening.  Pitt-Johnstown wrapped-up the regular season at 16-3 overall and 6-1 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown, which won the previous three PSAC Dual Meet Championships, is guaranteed at least a tie for the 2018-19 conference title.
 
The Mountain Cats and Lakers split the first two matches.  After 10th-ranked Brendan Howard put Pitt-Johnstown with a 9-4 win over Jacob Ruggeri at 125 lbs., Mercyhurst quickly tied it at 133 lbs. when Alexis Soriano dealt Matt Siszka a 9-4 loss.
 
Pitt-Johnstown won the next three bouts to build a 15-3 advantage.  At 133 lbs., second ranked Joey Alessandro scored an 8-0 major decision over Aidan Burke, 6453and top-ranked Chris Eddins closed out the regular season with a perfect 17-0 record with his 16-0 technical fall over Mike Clark at 149 lbs.  The Mountain Cats extended the lead to 15-3 when Corey Falleroni took down Kevin Kinyua in overtime to earn a 7-5 decision at 157 lbs.
 
The Lakers cut it to 15-6 with a 4-0 win by No. 5 Logan Grass over Devin Austin at 165 lbs., but that was as close as it would get.
 
Steve Edwards answered at 174 lbs. by pinning Kevin Holman at 4:53 to push it out to 21-6, and Brock Biddle broke open a close match to defeat Trever Begin, 10-4, at 184 lbs. and put the match out of reach.
 
Fourth-ranked Levi Niebauer then pinned Jeff Thompson at 1:11 in the 197-lb bout to make it 30-6.
 
The Lakers closed it out and set the final at 30-9 with sixth-ranked Jacob Robb's 4-1 decision over Tyler Oliver at 285 lbs.
 
With the loss, Mercyhurst slipped to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown back to Mercyhurst for the 2019 Super Region I Tournament on February 23 and to the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio on March 9 and 10.
