Softball Takes Down No. 25 Winona State, 6-4, in Clermont, Fla.

6271Kristie Radvan got it done in the circle and at the plate for the Pitt-Johnstown softball team.  Radvan tossed a complete game and drove in a pair a runs to help the Mountain Cats take down 25th-ranked Winona State (Minn.) University, 6-4, Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Fla.  Pitt-Johnstown won its second straight game and evened its record at 3-3.
 
Lani Van Zyl's run scoring double in the top of the first inning put Winona State in front, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with two in the bottom of the frame and four more in the second.
 
Morgan Cannin singled and Jade Stubblefield drew a walk, before Radvan's double to right field chased them home to give the Mountain Cats a 2-1 advantage.
 
In the third, Pitt-Johnstown turned two Winona State errors into four runs.  Following two walks and error by Anna Smolenski, Alyssa Hileman and Cannin scored on Jade Stubblefield's ground ball that was misplayed by Jen Giesey.  Stacey Walling then singled up the middle scoring Radvan and Stubblefield to push the lead out to 6-1.
 
6275Winona State answered with three runs in the top of the third.  Back-to-back doubles by Van Zyl and Alison Nowak to start the inning made it 6-2.  Two batters later, Smolenski connected for a two-run homer to right field that cut it to a two-run game.
 
However, Radvan held Winona State scoreless over the final four innings to preserve the 6-4 win.
 
Radvan doubled and drove in two, and Walling had a base hit and two RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.  Cannin singled and scored twice, Stubblefield scored two runs, and Hileman scored a run for the Mountain Cats.
 
Radvan scattered 12 hits and allowed four runs (3 earned) to pick up the win and improve to 1-0.
 
Smolenski was 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Kayla Kerkman and Van Zyl each had two hits for Winona State.
 
Katie Schlegel took the loss and fell to 2-1 after giving up six runs (2 earned) on three hits over the first 1 2/3 innings.  With the loss, Winona State fell to 13-3.
 
Pitt-Johnstown continues its Spring Trip in Florida with games against Ferris State (MI) and Saint Thomas Aquinas on Friday.  The Mountain Cats will wrap-up the trip against Saint Michael's (VT) and the University of Sioux Falls on (SD) on Saturday.
