After splitting a pair of games with 11
th-ranked Mercyhurst on Saturday, the Mountain Cats made the trip to Erie on Sunday to complete the series, and suffered 7-3 and 5-4 losses to the Lakers. Pitt-Johnstown is now 13-9 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC Western Division.
In game one, Mercyhurst scored four first inning runs off of Pitt-Johnstown starter
Braxton Roxby and went on to the 7-3 victory.
Scott Thompson's two-out RBI single scored
Colin Pasone to give the Mountain Cats a quick 1-0 lead, but the Lakers used a two-run single from Josh Sureowiec to highlight a four-run bottom of the first inning to give Mercyhurst a 4-1 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown cut it to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but Mercyhurst got those runs back in the bottom of the third, then added an insurance run in fifth on Jack Elliot's RBI double.
Tyler Smith had two hits and scored a run, while Thompson had a hit and RBI, and Pasone drove in a run and scored one for the Mountain Cats.
Roxby suffered the loss and slipped to 1-2 after giving up six runs (4 earned) on two hits in three innings. Roxby also struck out six and walked six.
Jake Ansell pitched the final three innings hand held the Lakers to one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking two.
In the nightcap, The Mountain Cats cut a 5-2 deficit to 5-4 with two outs in the top of the seventh, but the Lakers were able to get the final out to preserve the one-run victory.
Pitt-Johnstown took a 1-0 third inning lead on
Jack Shirk's RBI single that plated Pasone, but Mercyhurst answered with Elliot's 3-run home run in the bottom of the frame to put the Lakers on top.
Mercyhurst increased it to 5-1 with two more run in the fifth, before
Zach Zinn scored on
Lennox Pugh's triple in the Pitt-Johnstown sixth that cut it to 5-2.
The Mountain Cats loaded the bases in the seventh. Thompson drew a base loaded walk and
Ben Foose followed with an RBI single to cut it to 5-4, but Mercyhurst was able to get out of it and hold on for the 5-4 win.
Shirk was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Thompson, Pugh, and Foose each drove in a run for the Mountain Cats.
Joel Colledge got the start and pitched all six innings but took the loss and dropped to 0-3. Colledge gave up five runs (4 earned) on five hits, fanned eight and walked six.
With the sweep, Mercyhurst improved to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown visits Indiana (PA) for a PSAC doubleheader on Friday, before wrapping-up the conference series against the Crimson Hawks with a doubleheader at Point Stadium on Saturday.
