Mountain Cats Sweep PSAC Doubleheader From IUP, 5-2 and 4-3

6807Pitt-Johnstown got a strong outing from Dylan Heid in a 5-2 win to open Friday's PSAC Western Division doubleheader against Indiana (PA) at Point Stadium, before Scott Thompson's solo home run in the fifth inning of game two broke a 3-all tie and helped the Mountain Cats complete the sweep with a 4-3 victory.  Pitt-Johnstown improved to 15-9 overall and evened its record in conference-play at 3-3.
 
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown scored five unearned runs, and Heid pitched a complete-game and struck out 11 in the 5-2 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown struck for a pair of unearned runs in the second.  Colin Pasone's infield single scored Tyler Smith, and Dylan Broderick's one-out ground out plated Asher Corl.
 
IUP took advantage of a pair of Mountain Cat errors in the top of the third to knot it at two, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with three more unearned run in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Pasone's two run triple, to make it 5-2.
 
6823Heid held the Crimson Hawks scoreless the rest of the way.  Heid, who improved to 5-1, tossed a complete-game and held IUP to two unearned runs on just four hits.  Heid struck out 11 and walked three.
 
Corl was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, while Pasone went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for the Mountain Cats.
 
Colin Claus took the loss and fell to 1-4 after giving up five unearned runs on six hits over the first five innings.
 
Luke Hollander accounted for two of IUP's four hits.
 
In the nightcap, Thompson drove in three runs, including the go-ahead home run, in the 4-3 victory.
 
6813Ty Diehl's RBI double to the gap in left center gave IUP a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with three in the bottom of the third.  The Mountain Cats loaded the bases and got a two-run single from Thompson, and Jack Shirk scored on Zach Zinn's sacrifice fly that put Pitt-Johnstown in front 3-1.
 
The Crimson Hawks tied it at three in the fifth when Markus Cestra singled home Chris Eisel and Nick DiAndreth.
 
Thompson's long homer over the left field screen to lead off the bottom the fifth gave the lead back to the Mountain Cats for good.
 
Thompson went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, while Pasone had two doubles and a single, and Zinn collected two hits and drove in a run for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Brady Walker improved to 6-0 after pitching six innings and surrendering three runs on nine hits.  Walker also fanned nine and didn't allow a walk.  Jake Ansell tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn his first collegiate save.
 
With the losses, IUP dropped to 6-13 overall and 0-6 in the PSAC Western Division.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will wrap-up the PSAC series against Indiana (PA) on Saturday at noon at Point Stadium, before hosting a conference doubleheader against California (PA) on April 5 at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
