After winning a tight, 1-0, game in Thursday's PSAC Central Division-opener in Lock Haven, the Bald Eagles held off a four-run seventh-inning rally by Pitt-Johnstown and completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory.
Kristie Radvan drove in three for the Mountain Cats, now 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC Central.
In the opener, Pitt-Johnstown's
Kristen Coffay and Lock Haven's Bekah Slattery locked up in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the Bald Eagles were able to scratch out the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Amanda Criss led off the Lock Haven half of the fifth with a walk. Stephanie O'Grady entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to second on Traci Kromko's sacrifice bunt. Faith Ceely's infield single advanced O'Grady to third, and Mikayla Ruppert followed with a sacrifice fly that scored O'Grady with what turned out to be the only run of the game.
Slattery did the rest in the circle for the Bald Eagles. Slattery tossed a complete-game shutout, holding Pitt-Johnstown to four base hits. Slattery, who improved to 7-6, also struck out eight and walked one.
Coffay was the tough luck loser after giving up just one run and scattering seven Lock Haven hits.
Morgan Cannin,
Olivia Porter,
Jade Stubblefield, and
Ali Belgiovane all had a hit for the Mountain Cats.
The Bald Eagles got two hits apiece from Becca Caputo and Madison Mathes, and the sacrifice fly RBI from Ruppert.
In game two, Lock Haven built a six run lead, then held off Pitt-Johnstown to complete the sweep with the 6-4 victory.
Casey Carpenter doubled to start the bottom of the second and came around to score on Mathes' RBI single to right-center to give Lock Haven an early 1-0 lead.
The Bald Eagles added three more runs in the third. Caputo doubled with two outs and scored on Carpenter's two-run home run over the left-centerfield fence, before Rachel Gricoski connected for a solo homer that made it 4-0.
Kayla's McGee's single scored Bryann Hilty, and Ceely's sacrifice fly plated Criss in the fifth to increase Lock Haven's lead to 6-0.
Pitt-Johnstown got back in it in the seventh. Back-to-back walks to
Ashley Shor and Cannin and a single from Porter loaded the bases with one out. Stubblefield's infield single scored Shor from third, and Radvan's double to center off of Slattery, who just entered the game in relief of Gee, cleared the bases to cut it to 6-4.
However, Slattery was able to get the final two out to preserve the two-run Lock Haven victory.
Radvan went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Stubblefield added two hits and drove in a run for the Mountain Cats.
Lauren Gohacki and Porter also had hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Coffay suffered her second loss of the day and fell to 3-5 after allowing six runs on eight hits over the first three innings.
Alyssa Hileman pitched the final three innings and held the Bald Eagles hitless.
Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in two, and Gricoski collected a solo home run to lead Lock Haven.
Gee pitched the first 6 1/3 innings and surrendered four runs on five hits to improve to 6-3.
With the sweep, Lock Haven is now 13-9 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC Central.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC doubleheader against on Saturday at 1 p.m. at V.E. Erickson Complex, before going to Seton Hill for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
