IUP Gets By Pitt-Johnstown with 2-1 and 12-6 PSAC Central Victories

Johnstown, PA

6274Indiana (PA) scored runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to earn a 2-1 win in Thursday's PSAC Central Division opener at V.E. Erickson Complex, before scoring six runs in the top of the eighth inning in game two to complete the sweep over the Pitt-Johnstown with a 12-6 victory.  Jade Stubblefield collected five hits and three RBI to lead the Mountain Cats, now 15-13 overall and 5-5 in conference-play.

In the opener, the Mountain Cats loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third and took a 1-0 lead when Stubblefield was hit by a pitch that forced Taylor Mendicino home from third.

IUP tied it with a run in the top of the sixth.  Kassie Kesneck doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Jenna Rhue's groundout.

The Crimson Hawks then took the lead in the top of the seventh when Jaclynn Toki scored from second on Bethany Bunner's base hit to right field.

6272That run proved to be the game-winner.  Lauren Zola was able to strand the tying run at second in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 2-1 victory and close out the complete-game.  Zola improved to 4-9 after holding Pitt-Johnstown to one run on four hits.

Olivia Porter had two hits, while Morgan Cannin and Mendicino each singled for the Mountain Cats.

Kesneck singled and doubled for the Crimson Hawks.

Kristen Coffay fell to 6-6 for Pitt-Johnstown after allowing two runs on six IUP hits in seven innings.  Coffay also struck out six and walked two.

In game two, Renee Wall's three-run homer in the top of the first put the Crimson Hawks in front to start.

Singles from Bree Ginther and Carly Santillo put runners on first and second for Pitt-Johnstown in the third.  Hailei Markee pinch ran for Santillo and both Ginther and Markee care around to score on Stubblefield's double down the left field line that cut the deficit to 3-2.

After IUP added another run in the top of the fourth, Ginther scored from second on Santillo's single up in the Mountain Cats' half of the fourth to make it 4-3.

Pitt-Johnstown tied it in the sixth.  Mendicino doubled and scored on Santillo's RBI single down the left field line.

Rhue's RBI double and Wall's RBI triple in the top of the seventh off of Mountain Cat reliever Ashley Pagliei gave the lead back to the Crimson Hawks, but Pitt-Johnstown answered again in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.  Stubblefield tripled and scored on a wild pitch.  Kristie Radvan then doubled and was pinch ran for by Sydney Flinn, who scored to knot it at six on Lauren Gohacki's pinch hit double.

However, IUP scored six runs on seven hits in the eighth and went on to the 12-6 win to complete the sweep.

Stubblefield went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a triple and two RBI, and Santillo was 4-for-4 and drove in two for the Mountain Cats.  Ginther added two hits and a run, and Mendicino singled and scored two runs.

Pagliei fell to 3-4 after surrendering eight runs on 13 hits in four innings. Alyssa Hileman started and gave up four runs on six hits over the first four innings.

Wall was 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple and five RBI, Lauren Goetz and Kesneck each had three hits, and Rhue drove in two for IUP.

Cassidy Graham picked up the win for the Crimson Hawks.  Graham pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs on five hits.

With the sweep, IUP is now 11-20 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC Central Division.
