Volleyball Battles Back for Five-Set Win at Lake Erie

7404Jaden Gray had a match-high 15 kills, and Grace Miller had 14 kills to help Pitt-Johnstown erase a 2-sets-to-1 deficit in a five-set victory at Lake Erie (OH) College on Saturday.  Make it five straight wins and improved to 6-2.
 
After Lake Erie took a 2-sets-to-1 lead, Pitt-Johnstown battled back with 25-21 and 15-9 wins to claim the victory.
 
Lake Erie climbed out to a 16-12 lead on a Paige Allen/Maria Blatnik block to open the match, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with a 10-3 run to regain the lead.  Tatiana Pitcher's service ace, followed by a Storm attack error knotted it at 18, before J.C. Longeville's ace put the Mountain Cats in front 22-19.  However, Lake Erie scored the final six points, including an ace from Taylor Metzler, to earn the 25-22 win.
 
7409The second set see-sawed back-and-forth until Erin Carmody's ace and another Lake Erie attack error closed out an 11-3 Pitt-Johnstown spurt that put Pitt-Johnstown up 19-12.  The Storm got as close as three on three occasions, but the Mountain Cats evened the match at one set apiece with the 25-20 victory on Pitcher's third ace of the match.
 
In the third set, Lake Erie got off to a fast start and cruised to a 25-10 win.  Blatnik's kills and a Mountain Cat attack error gave the Lakers a 13-5 lead.  Lake Erie increased it to 19-7 and went on to the 25-10 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown came back with a 25-21 fourth-set victory for force a fifth and deciding set.  Cassie Pascarella's kill and a Lake Erie bad set gave the Mountain Cats an early 10-5 advantage.  The Storm clawed back to tie it at 12, but Pitt-Johnstown retook control and rebuilt the lead to 23-18, before kills from Caitlin Vrabel and 7414Miller gave the Mountain Cats the win.
 
In the final set, Pitt-Johnstown broke open a one-point game and wrapped up the match with a 15-9 win.  A block from Vrabel and Gray, and an ace from Pitcher capped a 5-0 Mountain Cat run, before Pitt-Johnstown used another Lake Erie attack error to seal the match.
 
Gray finished with 15 kills, a match-high five aces, 11 digs, and two blocks, while Miller had 14 kills to pace Pitt-Johnstown.  Vrabel had 11 kills and a pair of blocks, Anna Johns had four kills and four blocks, and Pitcher collected four aces and six digs.
 
Longeville led the Mountain Cats with 38 set assists, three aces, and 17 digs.  Carmody tallied 18 digs, and Gabi DeRenzo had 10 digs for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Dora Olah finished with 14 kills and Metzler added 11 kills for the Lakers, who fell to 1-9 on the year.
